The ways that the support forum was trying to explain how to do it were unnecessarily complicated and I did not understand what they were on about. I managed to do this last week !!
1. Make sure that you have changed the options in windows to 'show hidden files and folders'
2. Using the help/about in the Opera browser find out where the preferences folder is and navigate to that folder and save it somewhere where you will remember where it is (my documents etc).
3. Download the new Opera version .
4. With the opera browser closed replace the preference folder with the one that you have saved.

Backup Opera directory & mail directory and install 10.51 over 10.01.
