Can we have INTEGRATED Opera Backup & Restore?

Can we please have an INTEGRATED Opera Backup & Restore facility (in the browser)?

It does seem daft that Opera users are still expected to manually backup & restore their preferences. It would save us all a lot of time, effort & worry if the geniuses/genii at Opera got to work & made the job easy for the many millions of Opera users. It would also make Opera more attractive to the unwashed unconverted yes . We would all love you a lot more too flirt .

Already, CCJR has developed such a tool all by himself doh , so why not buy it off him & integrate it? Or show us all you can do a better job (if you really can and are not just "pretend" software developers) yikes knockout lol lol lol

Insulting people is not usually the best way to enlist their help.

This feature request has been made many times before, e.g. this thread from 2005.

See my sig for another free utility that does this well.

You will find a tip in this thread on how to improve the Advanced Search — the default search only goes back two months, but even that would have found this previous thread, which was closed as a duplicate.

doh I'm sorry and amazed that you didn't realise that I was trying to use HUMOUR to draw attention to my request. I was in no way trying to insult the excellent Opera developers! Did you really think that phrases like "the unwashed unconverted", "We would all love you a lot more too" & "pretend software developers" were intended to be taken seriously? Perhaps I spent too much of my Merseyside childhood & teens absorbing the local sense of humour. lol

I would say that it is a good thing that I have repeated a request that has not yet come to fruition. It seems entirely sensible to me, that the Opera developers are reminded of this omitted feature on a frequent basis. I doubt that they will actually DO anything if people don't keep asking them to.

PS. THANKS for the info you have provided.

If the default font size was big enough for me to easily read (without me always having to use a magnifier), I would use it. I assure you that I'm not trying to irritate anyone (though I am quite good at doing that lol ).

I get this problem on many of the forums I visit. People assume that everyone has perfect eyesight and/or huge monitor screens; they fail to consider the minority who have sight disabilities (like me) and/or small monitor screens.

Unfortunately, I consider the default font size to be far too small (the smallest I have ever seen on any forum); the "large"size is a bit too big, but at least everyone (I presume) can read it. I would prefer everyone to ignore the default font size & use the "large" size font, but I know that they won't. Having just said that, I've just noticed that the "large" size font is "SIZE=5" in the HTML code, so I've manually changed it to "SIZE=3"; I hope that this reduced size is bearable for you, I can still just about read it. smile I do wonder, though, why, if there are SIX sizes of font available, are only THREE available in the drop-down box? confused

Out of interest, why does a larger font annoy you? (please)

NOTE: I have now reduced the font size of my previous posts to "SIZE=3".

The preferences and so on would be better integrated into Opera Link. Setting up a new browser is pretty annoying when you've got custom buttons, scripts and emails settings to port around as well as simple preference settings.

It looks like you're shouting to get attention.

If you have problem reading small print, you need to change your default zoom in Preferences, Web pages, or set your minimum font size to something like 12 pixels in Preferences, Fonts. Using a large font for your posts is not going to help you to read the replies, and it may irritate other users.

Your use of large print in your first post led me to believe that you were angry.

If I was angry, I would SAY so, using words, not different font sizes (not that I get angry very often; I'm very tolerant).

For years, I have been told that using CAPITALS was "shouting" & that large fonts were not! However, sometimes it is necessary to "shout" to to get someone's attention; if it requires "shouting" what is wrong with that? In real life, people whisper, talk & shout. Everyone posting using the SAME size, the SAME font & the SAME colour, is boring; we might as well utilise all the facilities provided as otherwise the people who wrote this forum software were wasting their time including such choices.

Why do some people reel in :eyes:HORROR bigeyes when an individual decides to "break the mould", that is very strange? People should be individuals & not expected to conform as if they are part of a "herd". People shouldn't be so easily irritated!

Thanks for trying to be so helpful. smile I am already using a minimum font size of 14; unfortunately, making it any larger has unpredictable & unwanted effects on some web sites, so I prefer to leave that setting as it now is.

I presume that this font size (that I am using now - size 3) is unlikely to offend anyone?

Nevertheless, many people are easily irritated — that's why they have no talking rules in libraries, no music rules on trains, etc.

Its still irritating. I zoom in to 120% so that I can read normal sized text — your post yikes shouts yikes at me compared to other posts, even without the capitals and overuse of smileys.

If you need to shout to get someone's attention on an internet forum, you need to improve your communication skills. Formatting of text is fine, if its used with discretion. Large font sizes are intended for headings, not body text.

Well Opera Link sort of does the job, but I'm still not happy with it. I wish that Opera created some sort of compressed backup data files for each profiles so that you can easily transfer, backup, and use & manage multiple profiles on a single Opera installation...

Yep, dearly needed, though the manner of approach in the OP's first post is hardly warranted or productive. But, yeah, I sometimes get anxious myself and seem more unreasonable than I really am so I can see what he's getting at.

In any case, as a workaround I use the opensource application Bonkey (the backup monkey)... funny name, but a good piece of software monkey

As it can be seen in the screenshot below, I made a backup job where I selected the Opera profile folders and files I needed to backup, set it to run automatically once a day and set the backup path in a private Dropbox folder. Really useful when visiting dad and his million-toolbar firefox install.

Note: I am in no way affiliated with the application. I just found it quite difficult myself to find a free backup software that does not limit itself to folder-only backups (I want to manually select the files I need), supports scheduling and is easy enough to configure (don't want to teach mom command lines no ) so I thought I'd help.

Pesala: "See my sig for another free utility that does this well. "

I tried the "Backup" link in your sig and it directed me to a dead URL.

Since you are apparently familiar with backing up Opera, why can't I copy the C:\Documents and Settings\[my name]\Application Data\Opera\Opera\ folder when I have reformatted and reinstalled Opera. Opera doesn't recognize any of the files when I do that.

I have reinstalled Opera 10.00, build 1750, which was what my previous version was.

Thanks.

Hi,

I prefer Stu's Opera Settings Import & Export Tool 0.993 for my Opera Backups
and it works great.
I noticed the site is down at the moment so just do a Google search for it
or try this link. http://tinyurl.com/36zdnhk

Just a heads-up, I've moved my Opera Settings Tool page to http://my.opera.com/Disco%20Stu/blog/opera-settings-import-export-tool for now. The 'Homepage' button in the app itself will also take you there (assuming you have >=0.993). smile
