Obama doesn’t appear to take pride in our flag…
Posted: 21 Apr 2010 03:53 PM PDT
Yep, that’s right. In a move guaranteed to enrage movement activists, Obama had all U.S. flags removed from American installations in Haiti.
So far, we’ve spent $179,883,065 in humanitarian assistance to Haiti. We’ve sent our military there to help distribute food and water, to help find the missing, and to help rebuild the ravaged nation. But Obama is afraid that we’ll be considered “occupiers”, and so, the United States flag is not to be flown over any US installation in Haiti.
Navy Times points out the following.
The many nations helping Haiti recover from the devastating earthquake that struck there have set up their own military compounds and fly their flags at the entrances.
France’s tricolor, Britain’s Union Jack and even Croatia’s coat of arms flap in the breeze.
But the country whose contributions dwarf the rest of the world’s — the United States — has no flag at its main installation near the Port-au-Prince airport.
The lack of the Stars and Stripes does not sit well with some veterans and servicemembers who say the U.S. government should be proud to fly the flag in Haiti, given the amount of money and manpower the U.S. is donating to help the country recover from the Jan. 12 quake.
The Obama administration says flying the flag could give Haiti the wrong idea.
What exactly would that wrong idea be, Mr. President? Can Haiti imagine how life would be right now if we ignored them and provided no assistance?
Unbelievable.

I do not quite get the concept of being proud of a flag or even honoring a flag. Don't take it as being disrespectful, but I find it kind of ridiculous, soaking one's self-esteem from looking at some fabric. Doesn't such a person have anything else to be proud of? So if I see my country's flag flown in private gardens, at private homes, that may be fine, but I feel sublimely suspicious. On the other hand, if my eyes catch the well-known flag somewhere abroad, flown there by locals, be it just a hotel or a restaurant for example, I'm usually pleased thinking, that the folks there probably like my country.
In case of Haiti – well, you shouldn't have to hide, where you are coming from. But menacingly flying flags over fortified compounds really doesn't leave the most sympathetic impression; especially given the US' history of interfering in internal affairs of countries in the region. Showing thos flags or not – it should not really matter a lot; and not flying it surely is the "conservative", ie the more sensible decision that does not harm nobody.

OMG...Bush the first didn't take pride in our flag! Imma go through teabags at his house right now!During the Gulf War in 1991, U.S. forces took control of the main airport in Kuwait and briefly flew the American flag over their installation, Davis said, but higher-ups ordered it taken down to avoid an impression that U.S. forces were conquerors.

While acknowledging the situational misery of the people in Haiti, and hoping that they find a way to get a decent government and civil institutions together. The place is referred to as "The Cesspool of The Caribbean" for a reason and Obama is right about it not being an appropriate place for a national flag of the United States to be displayed.

Then again there are some countries who will fly their flags anywhere. My sympathy to those inhaling the "breeze".

And while you are at it, get a brush up in history as well before you go around criticizing and condemning, without understanding the facts, the very few still with a vision to save a world on the brink of disaster while the clock is winding down.
Viewing that in the past U.S. have occupied Haiti from 1915 to 1934, until Haitians had to purchase once again what they had already earned, their independence, pulling the American flags out of Haiti has nothing to do with likes or dislikes. It is a political decision design to safeguard the subtle strength and dominance that the U.S. has in the region, and a means to mend and stabilize an already fragile relationship as it has undermined every political and economic decisions of the country since their independence in 1804. Right now, Haitians see U.S. as a colonizer coming in to repeat history, and you need to prove them otherwise.
In addition, Americans would not want to attract too much attention from the international community into the region, viewing that they have discovered decades ago that the island is sitting on a hydrocarbon oil field (cleaner and better then fossil fuel) larger than that of the middle east where millions have sacrificed their lives over, and a mine field of natural gas that is even bigger (do some research…). To tense up military conflicts in the region would simple jeopardize their secrecy and interest!
Hence, your $179,883,065 is not spent in humanitarian aids alone if barely, especially when the first ten thousand troops who entered the country, diverting all humanitarian aids to neighboring countries for the first few days while structuring control and security over the territory until they were criticized, had no training whatsoever in humanitarian rescue mission. As you can see, no one gets anything for free. I believe it is an American terminology – “There is no such thing as a free lunch!”
If the U.S. were really interested in the development of Haiti, the approach would have been quite different. They would have spent that money, even less years ago to help the country develop its potential and its means to explore its own natural resources which would have paid off tenfold, and not hold the country hostage in a sea of poverty and pretending to be the savior when disaster strikes.
Our actions are being seen by the international community, and I don’t mean just U.S. actions. Sorry to disappoint you, but just like the greenhouse effect, globalization in its splendor is real. Be it politics, economy, etc.., you name it. There is no longer such thing as American politics as world politics. The question is: how to fit in and still look good and strong in the process? That is what President Obama is trying to establish and is misunderstood by many. Removing your flag on another country’s territory does not make you un-American or unpatriotic or ashamed of your flag as you put it, if it is a diplomatic decision when it is politically wise to do so.
When students in the Midwest were burning flags and were getting killed protesting against the Vietnam War, they were as American as one can be, standing up and dying for what they believe was the right course of action. It sent a message to our political leaders that led to the decision of ending the war – the right course of action that saved thousands of lives and a good fraction of the U.S. economy.
Then again, Tea Party and GOP members like you would not agree with my views since they believe that they can resolve every political struggle by bringing in the military. We cannot unite to resolve our own crisis at home, yet we want to change the world to be more like us. I can even imagine how you picture me in your head as you read this. Oh, He is so un-American!
Indeed, I am probably more American then you! Except that I have a good understanding of the world around me and our role in it, and have learned to make wise decisions in life as I am not blinded by empty rhetoric. If you stick to reading American newspapers and magazines alone just to be patriotic, you are missing the world out there and our place in it. Because as they represent the American views, they surely don’t represent the world’s view.
Yes, I am a Haitian-American voice and I don't believe you understand the crisis in Haiti and our role in it as correctly as I do. That would make you un-American!!!

More,in depth, horse dung. I am to the right but they are just lower middle class and middle class Americans. You people keep up with the lies and the next election will take us so far out no one will recognize us. Why don't you try and be a American not a Haitian American also.
GOP have more fun.....unless you are that traitor Barney. Screwing the whole country. Guess what he will be elected again even when the almighty Obama is history.

I don't think I'd bother except potentially on special occasions (like 4th of July). That is assuming you're actually properly taking them down each night and putting them up each morning, anyway.

http://www.examiner.com/x-37739-NY-Political-Buzz-Examiner~y2010m3d18-Obama-orders-US-military-to-stop-flying-the-flag-in-Haiti
Haiti Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive opined that Old Glory installed at the US base of operations at the airport, appeared as if the United States were taking over the airport. He relayed this concern to US Ambassador Kenneth H. Merten, and the ambassador agreed.
French and Latin American leaders claimed the US was occupying Haiti, here and here. Venezuelan President (dictator) Hugo Chavez claimed the United States detonated a weapon that caused the earthquake in Haiti.
And from elsewhere...
France is demanding the United Nations investigate and clarify the dominant US role in Haiti, after Washington deployed over 10,000 troops to the quake-hit country.
The demand came after US forces turned back a French aid plane carrying a field hospital from the main airport in the Haitian capital.
From another source...
However, a French Foreign Ministry spokesman later backpedalled.
U.S. ambassador Kenneth Merten said: "We're working in coordination with the United Nations and the Haitians." He acknowledged that planes needed to be "prioritized."
My guess is that it was panic time and some confusion was inevitable, but who knows? Maybe it's just Obama picking on the poor French.
I know that after the U.S., France is your favorite.
Those two? Gee how did you know that?
Nothing like a one post wonder to stir something up.Anyone want to place a bet on who they think the drive-by-poster was?
