Rangers v Celtic in America?

I picked up a small passing item in a newspaper a couple of days ago where some US promoter was talking about geting the 2 biggest teams in Scotland, Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic over there to play a game. To be honest I doubt it will be anything more than an aired stretched idea. After all football or socccer for a momentary condescension to ex-Colonists is hardly great over there?

Football is a big thing over here. Every Friday we wear our favourate team's jersey to support 'Football Friday' And to top it up 'The red devils' come over here annually to play with my favourate team. Football is also big in Brazil, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Soccer is big in Africa! Come June, the whole world will watch how great we are.
Keep it simple. Tizz.

It seems like you're not referring to the Belgian national team when you say "red devils." What are you referring to?

On the increase. In my area Soccer ( football ) has been the main fall sport for 60 or 70 years. All the schools as far as I know offer Soccer in fall for boys and girls. As a kid , and I am 69 years old, I started 4 years in High school. What we called wing as a freshman and then inside, both left and right, As a junior and senior I was what we called then, center forward. I guess that is now known as a sweeper. I think the main reason is economic for start ups. The cost of uniforms etc is much, much less than our traditional football.

As for spectator sports, where spectators know little of what is going on, our professional traditional football, is the # one sport replacing baseball.

Now the kids don't play anything much unless it is sponsored. When I was a boy Basketball and baseball were the main sports of recreation outside school. After all, only one ball was required for many to play. In fact I threw wadded rags through tin cans for my early basketball training. I became what was know as a barn shooter. bigsmile

Thnx for memories.

Actually "Glasgow" is not in the name of either team...

Very true but if they just said Rangers were coming to play in Boston they would be very disappointed if Berwick, Brora, Cove, Cambuslang, Kilsyth, Kilwinning or Arniston Rangers showed up instead.

To half the population, yes.
The other half like it/follow it.

But they have those names prefixed and the "2 biggest teams in Scotland" would not include them...
... come to that, there could be some confusion. Rangers versus Berwick Rangers.? smile

Too persnickety there about the prefix Glasgow. It is a common term used by many not just outside Glasgow or Scotland.

Glad to see football/soccer has some appreciation over there Denny.
