Welcome to the My Opera community!

Do you have a Yahoo Plus/Premium account that has pop access?

I believe you need the premium Yahoo account that allows pop access.

Only for US (mail.yahoo.com), I think. Free POP access (with some ad) is available for country domains such as .com.au, .co.jp and .co.nz.

As stated above, Yahoo! services are somewhat different in respective country domains. Advices from a user of mail.yahoo.com.au may not be relevant to the users of .co.uk, for example. Unless you provide your Yahoo! country domain, you may not get relevant advice.

Just to prove my above point, compare these:
UK Yahoo!: http://help.yahoo.com/l/uk/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/pop/pop-14.html (POP secure or non-secure & port 587 for smtp)
AU Yahoo!: http://help.yahoo.com/l/au/yahoo7/mail/yahoomail/pop/pop-14.html (Secure ports only & port-465 for smtp)
NZ Yahoo!:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/nz/yahooxtra/mail/yahoomail/pop/pop-14.html (Same as in AU. Notice the server names not ending with co.nz)

The best approach is to go to your yahoo.co/com.** (.** your country domain), go to Help for Mail and look up for "POP Yahoo! Mail with Another Email Client" (most likely http://help.yahoo.com/l/**/yahoo+++/mail/yahoomail/pop/pop-14.html)

Instructions by Opera for the mail client, or your regional Yahoo!? If latter, which one?

Settings are changed all the time. You always need to look up and confirm the latest.

[Addendum]
I have successfully retrieved messages from my NZ Yahoo! Mail account via POP3 (using above setting on 10.51 release). So whatever your issue is, it is not an issue with Opera Mail client.
