Open links in background tab

I cannot get Opera to open links in a background tab when they are ctrl + clicked on.

I have tried changing shortcut keys in Opera's advanced menu, editing the default ini files, creating my own custom ini files in $HOME/.opera/keyboard, removing everything related to opening links in keyboard shortcuts, read around on these forums, and probably a few other things I can't think of anymore.

I do not want to enable mouse gestures, I don't want to open up a context menu, I find it uncomfortable to middle click a lot of links, I prefer the keyboard, and I don't want to get used to an arbitrary keybinding for a non-primary browser.

A second relevant question is are keyboard shortcuts for certain things hard-coded in (bare minimum defaults)? I was wondering if perhaps it would notice that I'd decided I didn't like its defaults, and simply loaded its own. Opera is starting to remind me of Hal... (a decent way to kill Hal would be to open-source him, and allow the community to make patches and fix "features").

How do I change this or where do I search for information on this?

Potentially relevant details:
Version: 10.10
Build: 4742
Platform: Linux
System: x86_64, 2.6.33-ARCH
Qt library: 4.6.2

Then I think you have no other options. Ctrl shift click is what Opera uses. I use:

I know, I'm wondering if it's possible to change the default keybinding for that.

This sight help you although it is not perfect.

Allow mouse gestures. Delete all of them (now there is not a single mouse gesture you do not want). Create special mouse gesture for opening link in background as you like it.

I do not like standard mouse gestures ( too many of them ).

I use:
(when on link press right mouse button and move down a bit )
GestureDown = Open link in background page

Alright, well I tried out the mouse gesture for this. It sort of defeats the purpose though. When I right click then drag down, it moves my cursor away from where it was located. I don't want this because perhaps the next link I'm going to open is right underneath it. Oh well, not everything always works out perfectly.

Although, an idea for developers would be to lock the mouse cursor in place while the user performs the gesture. This way, they don't have to go back to where they were. Also being able to edit the key used for mouse gestures would be useful.

I use this feature a lot (90% of links) and even when you have links like this:

LINK1http://www.opera.com/
LINK2http://my.opera.com/community/forums/
LINK3http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/
LINK4https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/
LINK5http://homepage.hispeed.ch/ttt-o/guide/32full/list-fullalpha.html
LINK6http://homepage.hispeed.ch/ttt-o/

You can still open them one by one.
Move mouse on LINK1
Pres right mouse button and hold.
Move down on LINK2 release right mouse buton (it start to open LINK1 in background)
Press right mouse button and hold (still on LINK2)
....

You get the idea, when you get used to it it is amazingly fast (one motion and clicking) trick is that you do not need that much movement on mouse gestures the distance between links is enough.

Although I miss feature: combine gestures mouse click and keyboard shortcuts together in opera.
Your ctrl + click on link would be faster than my solution (but you would need to use 2 hands bigsmile)
