9.64 opera browser works but shows blank, white page only on all sites.

My Opera quit working several months ago on (visitors - kids)comp. (not my main) I decided to reinstall it yesterday. The browser links all work, and it takes new addresses fine, but the page always remains blank white. I cannot use the help, update, etc. links so I had to use firefox to ask for help here.
I have latest java on my computer. I've repaired install, tried different versions...
I don't know what to check. Can this be fixed?

edited to add: I just thought of something. It seems to lie in the loader of the page. How can that be checked and/or fixed?
Did I post this in the wrong forum? Did I ask the wrong question? Were there so many questions asked that this one ran off the page too quickly?
I've searched the forums for related issue and found a few. I tried the suggestions given to them but they didn't work for me. I've deleted new adware programs, opened all popups, and I've installed the newest version, down to the oldest with no success--the page remains a blank white. I really need my opera back.
Anyone?

Okay, I finally got it. The problem was in the advanced preferences 'network' setting. Under Proxy servers HTTP was checked by default. I unchecked it and am good to go. This is the first time I've ever had to change a default setting to get Opera to work out of the box, so defaults were the last thing I expected to be the issue.
I posted the solution in case anyone else comes across the problem. My network is 'always on'.
