How do you now manually add favicons?

I recently managed to lose all my favicons, and while I am slowly regenerating them, I have a problem.
There are a couple of sites on my personal bar which don't provide favicons.
I used to have manual ones there which I added by adding an "ICONFILE=" line to the sites' entries in the bookmarks file, pointing to a suitable icon or image file of my choosing.
I've now lost these icons on the personal bar, and they won't come back!
The default Opera bookmark icons look hideous on my personal bar among all the fancy ones produced by the other sites.
I've checked that the image files are still there in the Opera profile icons folder, and I've added the "ICONFILE=" lines to the bookmarks file, but it doesn't work any more. In fact the lines I've added seem to be being deleted!
Has the procedure for manually adding icons to bookmarks been changed, and if so, what is it now?
I can't find any references to it anywhere, but I know it used to work because I did it that way for years!
confused
Thanks, Dave.
