Systray icon as optional

It'd be the cat's pajamas if the system tray icon for Opera w/ M2 were optional.

I second that!

Maybe an option to only have it show up when I press ctrl+h?

Also, why is the tray icon in less colours than a normal 16x16 icon? (Using Window 2000)

legacy w2k doesnt accept 8bit icons in systray.
2+2=5 for extremly large values of 2.

You can remove (or comment out) the [Tray Popup Menu] section in your menu INI. But I agree - a checkbox would make it easier... wink

I'd like to cast my vote for this also. M2 = great, systray icon = stupid.

As an aside, having an 8-bit icon in the systray in Windows 2000 is easy, just go here:

Yes, there are patches, but everybody is to take responsability on his own for that... no software producing company would ever take responsability for touching another software in order to display its icons properly.

Some applications are smarter than others when it comes to detecting the color depth of systray icons. For example, my bandwidth monitor DUMeter, Miranda (IM client), and Winamp all display 8-bit icons when they can, even in Windows 2000. Other applications aren't smart enough to notice. Opera seems to be one of them presently. I'm not a Windows programmer, but presumably they say "Windows 2000 - must be 4-bit colors" without really checking as they should.

Anyhow, it was definitely an aside. Being able to turn off the systray icon and still use M2 is all I ask for.

Agreed, I wanna have the option not to have that icon (I never use it and prefer not to have too many systray icons).

If you never use it, do once and forever this.

I know that can be done, but that's not the point. The point is there should be an option to turn it on or off easily without editing ini files.

I removed the [Tray Popup Menu] section, but the trayicon is still there (only now I don't get a menu when I rightclick it).

I realized that removing the entry in the INI is just removing the menu, not the systray icon smile My stupid error...

Bump.

I cannot accept Opera Tray who is useless for me. Specialy because I don't use automatic check mail, I check only when I want.

I have already 10 Tray, I will not accept one anymore. If I must stop use M2 to retire it, I will stop.

A small option to disable the Tray without M2 is a important feature to add.

I'll throw my request in here as well. I was told in the IRC channel that the only way to remove the icon was by disabling mail and chat accounts - I don't know if that is true, but I like to use M2 and find tray icons very annoying. Please let us disable Opera's tray icon!

Add this to your [User Prefs] section of Opera6.ini located in your profile directory:

Show E-mail Client=0

back when the previews came out and this option was mentioned on the boards, now it seems like the information is being lost in the sands of time! Tell all you know and lets beg opera to make this optional (and off by default, PLEASE, since most people use opera for web not mail) in 7.52.

Seriously, there should be a minamalist/advanced user install option or altogether different download for opera. Include some of the non-troppo stuff, the Breeze Micro skin, etc =).
