MSN Wonderwall (wonderwall.msn.com) redirects Opera to the mobile version

Hi All,

First post here. I've had a problem with different versions of Opera that have driven me nuts, so I thought I'd finally ask about it. Whenever I click a link in certain emails they open up in mobile mode in Opera. I'm running on an Asus G72 laptop, so there's nothing mobile here. There is nothing specific about the links, but they are usually connected to a video. Because of mobile I then get this message "Can't play video on your phone" or something to that effect.

I have tried retyping the address, but it switches right back to the mobile equivalent. You would know it must be driving me nuts, it's enough to make me ask a question here. p bigsmile Can someone tell me how to get out of mobile mode and back to normal?

Thanks,
Mark

I don't know what you are talking about!
Which website is presenting this "error"?

Thanks for the quick reply! For instance if I click on http://wonderwall.msn.com , I get http://ent.mobile.msn.com/en-us/wonderwall/

So instead of all the standard web page graphics and composition I get a blank page with a single column down the left side of the page, with a very sparse amount of content.

Numerous other pages do it too, but this is the only one I could think of offhand. The worst part is that I can't find a pattern to it so that I could figure out what to change or turn off? Any ideas?

Also, this only happens in Opera, if I try Firefox, Chrome, IE, etc. they are fine and go right to the correct site.

Confirmed. This is because Microsoft is doing browser sniffing and redirecting us to the mobile version. Maybe they think we're using Opera Mini or Opera Mobile.
Identifying/masking as other browser doesn't works either...
Oh It has to be a Microsoft website! ;x

I'll ask this topic to be moved to the "Open the Web" forum where is the correct place. We'll get a solution there.

You haven't posted in the wrong place, we weren't sure it was browser sniffing and not many people know the "Open the Web" forum. wink

Yes, as a temporary solution..., but identifyin / masking as other browser is giving a completely crazy non-formatted page.

I see in the replies that this thread was supposed to move to the open web forum, but I didn't find it there. Has any headway been made on this issue yet? I am experiencing the same problem, especially with http://news.cnet.com for example, as well as some other sites. I have tried manually entering the address, masking and Identifying as both Firefox and IE, nothing works, not even clearing my cache and cookies. FYI, I am running Vista Home Basic with Opera 10.53.

FWIW, I confirm the problem with the MSN site, but I do not have any problem with your cnet link.
I'm using Opera 10.10 with Vista Home Premium.

So, I wondered if MSN tagged you with an "opera" cookie upon your first visit? But using Opera's Site Preferences (rt-click) to delete & refuse cookies, plus masking as Firefox didn't fix it for me. Then I made this rather strange discovery.
  • Opera's rt-click Site Prefs dialog DOES NOT change my browser ID;
  • But a custom button (maybe from Pesala's site?) DOES change the browser ID.
  • Now, I'm wondering why~!!

I have the custom button (on my address bar) showing a droplist of browser IDs, and allows changing it. But using Opera's Site Prefs to mask as Firefox has no impact on the browser ID shown in my address bar. Yet, INSTEAD OF using the rt-click Site Prefs, using that custom button DOES CHANGE the browser ID to Firefox. Then, clicking reload in the MSN website enables the full page to load normally.
  • I have no idea why rt-click Site Prefs/Network fails to change the browser ID.
  • I have no idea why the custom button DOES change the browser ID.
  • If someone wants to coach me through the menu INIfile, I'll be happy to post that button code.

Like I said, I even deleted my cookies and cache to no avail. But still, I'd be interested in that Browser ID button if you can manage to get it up, or maybe point me to the same place where you got it initially?

There's one in Appearance already - okay, two, sort of.

Under Buttons > Status, there's a status field for "Identify as", it displays your current setting and clicking on it switches to the next in order (Opera, Firefox, IE); right-clicking on it lets you select an Identify as setting directly. (Sorry, Mask as is a site preference.)

Alternatively, in Buttons > Preferences you can find a drop box with the Identify as settings. Left-clicking will drop down the list for you to choose from.

Confirming server-side sniffing. To see the site properly, I have to mask as Firefox both for wonderwall.msn.com (content server) and static.wonderwall.com (where styling, scripts etc comes from).

There is no bug report about this problem - please report one on https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/ and the developer relations team will follow up.

Moderator note:

This thread seems to be more appropriate in the Open the Web forum, and the title is not very descriptive, causing problems for other users.

I have moved the thread from the browser forum, and edited the previous title, "Problem of jumping to mobile mode" to make it a bit more useful to other members.

is there a way to find that specific cookie and delete it? or do i have to delete all cookies from opera? FWIW, I just upgraded to 10.54 and there was no change in how that cnet page is displayed.

Go to preferences > advanced, find cookie section and click the "Manage cookies" button. Here you can search for servers and delete specific cookies.
