Adding www and dot-com at address bar

Until a couple of releases ago, I could type the name of the website on the address bar without the www and .com. If I typed opera, it would automatically go to www. opera .com.

For the last couple of releases, typing opera goes to the google search results for opera.

Can I get my www and .com automatic insertion back or do I have to learn to hit Ctrl+Enter like on IE?

Must be a newly introduced bug. Server Name Completion is still there but it doesn't work for me either.

Ditto and annoying. Started just in the last couple of days with the most recent release.

There's lots of topics of this same issue.

Remember, Ctrl+Enter does not use "Server Name Completion". It only adds www. and .com.

It works as designed = correctly.

If it works as designed, then:

1. The design is wrong, as the poll showed 78% of respondents wanting it to stay as it was.
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=375881&showresults=true

2. The change in design is not complete, as the preferences still allow you to select SNC that doesn't do anything.

3. The online documentation for 10.52 is still based on SNC working, but it doesn't.

If it's correct now, then these many years I've been using opera, it has been flawed the whole time.

One of the early features and drawing points for me sticking with Opera was that I didn't have to type the www or .com. Suddenly, within the last two weeks, this feature has ceased working even though it is marked correctly under Tools. It may be designed correctly, but it is not working correctly at the moment and I look forward to it being fixed soon.

That is very interesting. Good find. The most interesting (and disturbing) thing in that link you provided is the following text:

Tip: To skip directly to server name completion by prefix and suffix, press Ctrl+Enter.

This is INCORRECT. It seems that Opera has messed up this feature and its documentation pretty badly. Ctrl+Enter does NOT use SNC at all!! All it does is that it enters www. and .com, nothing else. Opera?! knockout faint

Opera itself is STILL very much confused about the SNC.

The online documentation for 10.60 still has the following INCORRECT information in it:

Tip: To skip directly to server name completion by prefix and suffix, press Ctrl+Enter

Next flaw; in the online documentation for 10.60 (same link as the above), Opera declares the following (emphasis mine):

When you enter a single word (for example "opera") in Opera's address field, Opera will:

  1. Look for a bookmark nicknamed "opera"
  2. Search using your default search engine for "opera"

Now, what does Opera settings say about this? (Preferences -> Advanced -> Network) Above the SNC button is a text (emphasis mine):

Choose where Opera should go when you enter a single word in the address field

Ok, the problem is that when you click the SNC button to CHOOSE where Opera should go, there are following options:

  • Look for local network machine
  • Try name completion...

Whoops.

MAD! doh

Regrettably not.
I also stay at 10.10 until server name completion works again as specified in opera:config#Network|HostNameExpansionPostfix and Prefix.
