Panel window opening on Opera restart.
This problem started when I downloaded Opera 10.52 and it's taken me a few days to figure out what causing it.I have the side panel active as I find it handy for notes, checking downloads etc.
When 10.52 was downloaded and installed the first use of it was fine. On restarting Opera later when it started up the side panel was expanded.
First thought was that I hadn't closed it last time, so closed it and closed Opera, restarted and again the side panel opened on restart.
I decided that perhaps my operaprefs.ini may have got corrupted somehow during the upgrade. So I deleted it, restarted Opera and it was fine, the side panel was there but not opening. This was fine until yesterday when I downloaded something. Back to Opera last night and when it opened the side panel was once again opening when Opera restarted. I remembered at this point that I had downloaded something just before updating to 10.52
Strange.
So closed Opera deleted the operaprefs.ini again. Restarted and it's fine. Closed and restarted a few times to make sure it was constantly opening correctly. Satisfied that this was the case I went on-line and downloaded something, closed Opera and restarted.
As I suspected on restarting Opera the side panel was once again open on the restart.
I don't know why this is happening and I don't want to be having to delete my operaprefs.ini every time that it occurs.
Is there some hidden setting I could change to stop this behaviour (I looked and can't see one).
Could someone test this for themselves?
But make sure you make a backup of operaprefs.ini before you do
Here is my side panel layout from the top.
Bookmarks, Widgets, Unite, Notes, Downloads, Links, History, Windows, Info and ImageShack Sidebar (you may not have that one).
Then download something close Opera and restart. Does the same happen to you?

What happens if you set the Transfers Panel option to "Never show when starting downloads"?

That was the setting I had already Pesala.
Really thought that deleting the operaprefs.ini would sort it out but it wasn't to be.
Finally resorted to a fresh installation and that sorted it. Will be interesting to see if it reappears at the next update.

I have been having the same issue. Deleting operprefs resolves the issue until I use the panel again. The same for deleting Active Window in in HotListWindow section of the preferences editor. I tried fresh install, and the first time I opened Opera the panel opened. The only solution I have found is to simply not use the panel.
When you did a fresh install did you remember to remove your profile folder before installing Opera?

I've had pretty much this same problem using Opera 10.53 under OSX 10.6.2.
I think the problem is "too many bookmarks".
For my usage habits, I would get stuck with the side-panel opening on launch if I'd accessed History in my previous session. My "solution" was to restore the previous operaprefs.ini from previous day's backup, which would at least close the side panel for the time being, until the next time I used a side panel.
That extra effort made me hesitant to access History or any other side panel at all.
I confirmed that removing ALL my Opera Preferences seemed to solve the problem (at least initially, no guarantee it won't re-appear if I re-enter all my preferences.) I can't see myself purging ALL my Opera settings. My Opera profile is full of bookmarks, RSS feeds, sessions, wand and password data, custom searches, speed dial, blocked content and extensive site preferences. I'm one of those poor deluded people who surf the web with JavaScript and Plug-ins turned off and with most cookies deleted when I Quit the browser, and I only activate features or preserve cookies via Site Preferences when I visit a site that needs them and that I really want to visit and trust. Opera's ability to customize such per-site usage is a big reason I use it. But it also means I have a heavy investment in those custom settings. Re-entering all that is more than I care to do for the occasional use of the side panel.
I should just disabled the panels altogether. They're nice, but not THAT important to me.
But, I tried selectively restoring individual Opera config files until I discovered which one provokes the problem. (More work than the inconvenience was worth, but my brain wraps around an axel sometimes.) For me, the offending file was: bookmarks.adr . If I remove bookmarks.adr from my Opera Preferences, the sidebar problem appears to vanish, permanently.
This is bad news, because they are your bookmarks. I have lots. Too many, I'm sure. I tried exporting my existing bookmarks, removing bookmarks.adr, then re-importing the exported bookmarks (in case it was just a corruped format), but that processes not only restored my bookmarks, it restored the side panel bug!
(BTW, after removing bookmarks.adr, I was briefly confused because Opera still seemed to have a lot of my older bookmarks. I eventually figured out Opera 10 was automatically importing my ancient Opera 9 bookmarks that were still lying around in my Preferences folder, and I had to remove them, too, to prevent the automatic import.)
I eventually opened the exported bookmark file in a text editor and manually removed about hundred bookmarks (The Trash folder content plus some miscellaneous junk.) Apparently. that worked. My remaining bookmarks were restored and the problem was gone.
Then I tried removing bookmarks inside Opera's "Manage Bookmarks" feature rather than trying to mess with the export file in a text editor. Also worked. (BTW, remember to "Empty Trash" after removing bookmarks, or they're still there, just in the Trash folder.)
I tried removing a lot of different combinations of bookmarks, and couldn't determine a specific bookmark or an absolute number of bookmarks. I began with 783 bookmarks in 49 folders and a 174,722-character bookmarks.adr file, and got sidebar free around 705 bookmarks (in 49 folders, 154,824 characters.)
I concluded that the issue is "too many bookmarks" (a judgement that's likely true in other ways, reflecting sloth on my part in cleaning out the detritus.) At least for me. You might try removing some of your bookmarks (don't forget to Empty Opera's Trash folder to really get rid of the bookmarks!)

See my observation in post http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=529632 Removing all external links from the panel made Opera remember the window positions on exit.
Clearing the bookmarks should also work -all external links are basically bookmarks.
I'd like to know if there are people on 10.53 or 54 who can add bookmarks to the panel and still have the window settings remembered.
