On the mail toolbar is a View button (with a down arrow indicating that clicking it results in a menu). Click it and goto Display. In there, make sure "prefer HTML" is checked. And, if you want to allow unsafe remote content (like images) to load, you can uncheck "block external embeds".
You can also double-left-click on the message list entry to open the message in a new tab (or keep pressing 'i' to toggle between the views), so there's more height to view the message. You can also right-click on the message and choose "View all headers and message" if you want to view the source of the message.
