Opera 10.53 Won't Start -Solution.
I just upgraded tonight from 10.10 to 10.53 on an OS 10.5.8. It basically killed my opera.I can't get it to open (and yes, I've looked through the forums and saw the troubleshooting. It does nothing for me.), and so I tried a downgrade back to 10.10 and now that won't open, either. I've been trying for the longest time to get anything to come up because this was my main browser. My most important bookmarks and passwords are stored in this thing, and needless to say, I'm getting pretty upset.
It seems that some mac users are getting screwed on this, and if that's the case, fine. I can use Safari. However, I'd like to know if there's a way to retrieve my bookmarks some kind of way. I'm obviously NOT browser savvy at all. Opera pretty much just WORKED (except for several bad quirks) and now I'm pretty much lost on how to get what I need from it so I can move on.
If anyone can tell me how to get my BMs back (if that's even possible), I'd be very grateful.
EDIT: I took chance and it worked, so I want to share it with others who may be having issues.
1) Delete Opera completely.
2) Then go into your library and delete:
Application Support -->Opera
Caches -->Opera
3) Reinstall the new version.
You should finally get it to boot and it will do so with your bookmarks/etc intact.
Hope this helps!

Hi,
Problem is, same thing happend to me, except I've been using Opera for mail ever since it appeared for Mac.
If I delete App Support ---> Opera, there goes my mail…
The thing that worked for me - sort of - was to install Opera in my Document folder.
The darn thing is way, way slow…
It takes forever to launch…
And it won't collect my mail POP at Gmail OR connect to Gmail online server itself…

You could attempt to rename the folder "old opera" and then start Opera. It would at least possibly identify whether the issue is with any of the widgets or emails you already have. You could do the same with ~/Library/Preferences/Opera Preferences/.If I delete App Support ---> Opera, there goes my mail…
You can safely delete the ~/Library/Caches/Opera/ folder without loosing data or preferences.
I wish I had more answers. I don't do mail or anything like that in Opera.
I just know it wouldn't start for me, and in a last ditch effort, I saved the
folders to my server, then deleted Opera completely and prayed for the
best.
There seems to be issues with this thing, I must say. I can't get my font
preferences to take at all, the scrolling is on the awful side, making my
eyes go buggy because the same line with repeat about 6 times as I scroll,
and now, certain commands on certain websites (Deviant Art, for example)
won't take. Sigh. I was really hoping this new update would be awesome.

I was just wondering whether, by any chance, this version - like so many things now - was incompatible with OS 10.4 Tiger and/or non-intel Macs.
In case people are wondering, I still need OS 9-Classic. Some of us do.
If it's an incompatibility, I haven't seen it written anywhere, though.
Reason I thing this might be it…
Now, I've checked what caused my old version to crash: Automatic update. Definitely.
By the symptoms and what I found lurking in a Library folder (I forget which).
Some intelligent mechanism should stop that if the software is not longer compatible with the system version.
And I haven't had the least little problem with the update on the PC laptop.
Recent acquisition, the PC is completely clean.
No mail. No accounts set up yet. Just Opera and my bookmarks.
I sent Opera 10.5.3 to the Gmail server on the PC Vista with no problem at all (same IP, same software…).
It connected to the mail server normally.
I tested the - still virgin - Opera mailer (M2) on it. Set my Gmail accounts for IMAP since it connected — an option I'd never tested.
Way to go, IMAP. No loss whatever else happens and perfect synch. You can rig up some other mailer for IMAP in a jiffy if worse comes to worse…
And it all worked. Just fine. On the PC.
Connect to anythig, Gail included.
Send an receive.
So, it's a Mac problem.
Reminds me of the bad old days of buggy versions and buggy betas…
I've been with Opera since version 4 for Mac, and using it as a mailer since version 7 when it appeared.
I feel like an unwilling beta tester all over again just now. Not happy at all.
Cause Opera is my favorite work tool and my memory!
Wasted a whole day chasing shadows.
Anyway…
Now that this is clear, I'm going to kill Opera for good - just chuck out everything (well, hide it, really).
Then, I'll reinstall, see what happens.
And if I get more slowness or weirdness, I'm back to the old version.
No update until the next Intel Mac.
Ah, yes… another strange thing with 10.5.3 on my Mac: delayed (very, very delayed) reaction to ALL keyboard commands, assorted with beach ball.
Not good at all, that.

We have a new development snapshot which should fix most of the problems users have had with startup crashers.
http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2010/05/05/startup-crashes-be-gone
1. Backup your computer (for example using Time Machine)
2. Download the snapshot and run it
3. If it works properly, try right-clicking Opera and choose Show Package Contents
4. Go to Contents/Resources/ and delete the file PrefsSuffix
5. Run it again (this will upgrade your install, bringing back bookmarks and settings)
Please report back if any of your are still encountering problems.

Was suffering this problem with 10.4.11 PPC
Fixed it like this!
Open the Opera Universal .DMG file and DO NOT DRAG THE OPERA PROGRAM TO THE 'APPLICATIONS' FOLDER instead DRAG IT TO YOUR 'DESKTOP'!
'Double click' on this to Run it, to prove that it works.
I then found that if I moved it to the 'Applications' folder it would not work, so place it in the 'Utilities' folder and then make an alias of it.
Move the alias to the 'Applications' folder now use the alias or the 'Dock' item and it should Run.
This would seem to suggest some permission problem with 10.53 for the Mac
