I'm +1 for moving operamail.com users to FastMail.fm or integrating it into My Opera and improving the service in general but I think Opera Software already has in mind what it wants to do (of course they must have thought of that before buying the webmail company).

I do agree that it could be confusing, however since FastMail is such a popular service Opera should put their mark on it. Whether it be OMail (which i like personally) or OperaMail.
And YES for integrating it into Operamail.com, and My Opera!

definitely needed. here is where My Opera "integration" could help: every member already haves 2GB of space.
I am not against launch of a new service named omail (or OpMail) alongside the existing fastmail service, with a provision for the existing user/customer to change to an equivalent @omail.com address, or having an equivalent @omail.com address as alternative/secondary. (And same goes for the existing operamail.com user/customer)

Want to send me a message? Send it to mimismum(at)myopera.com (not mimi_s_mum etc)
Looking for Opera 12.16 or earlier? Try

Oh of course not! The key is to keep the feel of FastMail alive while Opera-fying it.

If the name would change users would not leave in herds just for that. Let's say Opera was acquired by Oracle and it was renamed to The Oracle Browser; would herds of people leave their browser just for a change in name?

Google - gmail.com
Yahoo - ymail.com
Actually, it's mail.yahoo.com. And it's called "Yahoo Mail", not "YMail".
You get it? Also its short and easy to remember.
I fail to see why Opera should be doing this. There's no reason whatsoever. Because Google does it? LOL.

Not sure on this one. "Omail" sounds cheesy when spoken. I also don't hear anyone refer to Yahoo Mail as Ymail. With Gmail, it's different. It sounds cool and that's what people refer to it as (although, depending where you're at, it might be referred to as Google Mail instead).
I also don't like the idea of changing the name from Fastmail or changing the fastmail.fm domain. They sound too cool to change.
I think it'd be cool if Opera just created an Opera-specific, customized Webmail UI for the fastmail backend, put it on http://operamail.com/ and called it "Opera Mail". They could even add a (Powered by Fastmail!) in there to make it sound even better. It'd then of course still be @operamail.com and could be intergrated with my.opera.com in some way. As to whether you could use example@operamail.com to log into fastmail.fm to use the fastmail UI instead and vice versa, that would depend on how things go first.

Not at all, but it was presented as a list indicating that "everyone else is doing it". Not only is that wrong, but just because someone else is doing something doesn't make it the right thing to do for Opera.
And "Omail" would be an insanely crappy name anyway.
It would be far more sensible if, instead, "omail.com" or whatever were added to the existing FM domains -- over 100 so far. That way everyone can be happy.
I would prefer if they just called it operamail (and upgraded both fastmail and operamail.com to have pop3 in the free accounts with at least 2 or 3GB of space)

I may be an Opera employee but I am also a long term FastMail user. Personally I am not keen on the name omail, though I see no problem with adding omail.com (or something else along those lines) to the vast list of domain names you can already choose between.Rename Fastmail to Omail.
Indeed I don't really see the problem with retaining the FastMail brand. It is a great brand built up over many years. Indeed many companies keep old strong brands when they acquire a company. Consider SUSE and Novell or perhaps more relevant to a discussion on mail services, Hotmail and Microsoft. (note: This would not prevent having an omail or operamail alongside, powered by FM's technology.)
I would be happy enough with what we did when we acquired AdMarvel, simply placing 'An Opera Company' on the home page.
P.S. This is outside of my area, so these are just opinions. I have not been involved in the discussions around this (I have been mainly focussing on the upcoming Opera Beta of late), hence I don't yet know exactly what is planned.
Seriously, FastMail already have a solid & large fan base equivalent to Opera, totally changing or eliminate the brandname will destroy the loyalty of the longtime fan base. If you want to maintaining a good relationship with the valuable fan base, the brandname must be recognizable with the older brandname after the merger. We need to show respect to the well established brandname & it's customer.
Something like "Opera FastMail" should be good enough, you don't spend millions to acquire a brandname & destroy it...

According to whois.net the domain belongs to a company named Melbourne IT, "a world leader in domain name registrations and related online business solutions." I think the domain is purchasable...

Ok, after heavily considering the long term people I think that the name you suggested would be a wonderful option.
But whatever you do, you HAVE TO improve the free version! 10MB and 45 day inactivity time is ridiculous! At least 1GB, and no inactivity time (and keep IMAP of course!) would be the least, to be a contender for gmail etc...
(If nothing else stated the most current weekly) on a nice Dell Studio XPS 16!
well, I was hoping for a nice username (*) and if the params improve (mainly space-wise, inactivity time doesn't bother me, and IMAP is a must) I would gladly dump gmail... and of course setting a jabber server for the same ID would be awesome!

(*) not that I don't like my nickname, but I would like to use my regular first name as an ID (;

that's Twitter biggest fault, they never let deleted usernames free.
