No" tabs" function since 10.53 Upgrade -- not a preferences or shortcut issue... What to do?

I let Opera automatically upgrade from 10.52 to 10.53 last night.

It lost the tabs function in the process.

In Tools/Preferences/Advanced/Tabs I have "Reuse current tab" UNchecked. I have checked "Open new tab next to active", "Show thumbnails when hovering tabs", and "Enable thumbnails in tabs". None of those work.

In Tools/Preferences/Advanced/Shortcuts/Middle-Click Options I have "Open in New Tab" checked. But it doesn't.

What happens when I am on a webpage and select a link to open in a new tab is that the current page clears and reverts to the "Speed Dial - Opera" page. I lose my current page and do not get my new page, and do not get a new tab nor a new window.

Very weird and frustrating.

I'm running Windows XP Home SP 3.

Tried using System Restore to roll back to my previous version, but unfortunately, Opera uninstalled it so that is not an option.

Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas what might fix it for me?

Thanks,
ken

I am using 10.53 and tabs still work.

This is why I don't use the auto updater, I stick to using the classic installer manually.

I think my next step is to fully uninstall, download the latest version of Opera, and see if a clean install will work for me.

Well... An uninstall and reinstall didn't do the trick.

And.... It wasn't a full uninstall. Because it retained my favorites and my plug-ins. Am wondering if perhaps this problem is the result of a conflict in 10.53 with one of the plug-ins?

Here's the list I get when I View/Developer's Tools/Plugins. If there's an Opera wiz who recognizes a great candidate for a conflict here, please let me know and I'll look into what it takes to disable it.

SOLVED:

I needed to enable View/Toolbars/Tab bar.

And then needed to get rid of the enable thumbnails function. Otherwise, my tabs were eating up a third of the vertical area on my screen.

They certainly appear different than they did yesterday, and different from how they have appeared for the four or five years I've been using Opera. But at least they're back now. Which is good. Because I couldn't use Opera without them.

Best,
ken

P.S. Did we have "Tab bar" as an option under toolbars in earlier versions of Opera? And, if so, I wonder why it was turned off in the automatic upgrade?

Now I've even got them looking the same as before. In the new version of Opera, whenever I have more than six tabs open (on my 10.1 inch netbook screen), they begin truncating, becoming narrower. That allows many more tabs to fit on the screen. And apparently, I had about 20 open and so they were very, very narrow little guys. After I closed all but six, I regained the tab appearance I am accustomed to.

So, all is well now in OperaLand.
