Opera creating invisble windows that show up in in expose
I've noticed that after using opera (10.53) for a while, whenever I expose all windows, there will be several empty spaces where windows should be but nothing appears. I found out though that these are actually some invisible windows opera has opened, because they'll also appear when I do expose application windows with opera active.Quitting and reopening opera will make them disappear, and have opera behave like normal. Not sure what may be causing them, I'll keep playing around to see if I can figure it out.
Anyone else experience this? For reference, I'm on a brand new install (from scratch) of snow leopard 10.6.3.
HI,
I have recently downloaded 10.54 and tried running it on my G5 running OS 10.5.8. I have been following the updates for a while and I have been having a problem which took me a while to identify. When Opera is loaded the window that opens first time is not quite full page. By clicking on the green button at the top left. I can toggle between full size and Opera's default opening size. I like running Opera with the window at full size. No problem with the first session. However, after quitting and restarting Opera I start with a window that is full screen. This is how it has always worked. However, recently, I can't say exactly when it started, clicking the green button makes the window disappear when Opera starts up fuill screen and I can't recover it. It should only disappear when I click the red button. Clicking on the Window menu reveals a lot of invisible windows. Invisible in that clicking on them does not make them show and they also cannot be deleted. Clicking on "Close all but active" has no effect except on the currently open window. (The only one open for me in most cases.)
I noticed this problem a while ago and have been keeping my window at slightly less than full size. I had expected the problem to disappear with each new version but it has persisted. I notice that autopera.win holds the window history and I am wondering about editing it or deleting it. This applies to "Opera Preferences 1050" and "Opera preferences". I can access either with different versions of Opera. A different set of "invisable" or "unopenable" windows shows up depending on which preferences are accessed but it looks like the same problem.
The problem may be persisiting because each new version of Opera accesses the exisitng preference files. And there may have been a corruption some time ago that is causing the problem and there may not be any problem with a new or clean autopera.win file.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks, Alan

Hi, back again, continuing on from my last posting above.
Been playing around with 10.54 build 8350 on my G5 running OS 10.5.8
Once all the windows are invisible, that is, one can see the desktop or whatever other programme was behind Opera, pressing Option with F11 renders the selested window visible. Sometimes tabs work in this window and not other times. Also links are not always active. By pressing Opt/F11 again (or ESCAPE) one can select another of the invisible windows and render it visible with Opt/F11. As before, clicking on "Close all but active windows" does not work on invisible inactive ones.
Further to my previous post, I tried deleting autopera.win before starting Opera (this version). It removes the invisible windows but the basic problem described above is till there. Opera makes another list of invisible windows every time the green button is pressed on a window that was full screen at loading. I mean a window set to occupy the whole screen with the menu bar showing at the top. I don't mean full screen as a result of pressing Opt/F11.

Hi, Back again. Doesn't seem to be any progress with this problem as I have described in my last posting. Have just downloaded 10 54 build 8358 and exactly the same problem is there. Once a window has gone invisilbe, clicking on it in the window menu has no effect and it cannot be deleted with "Close all but active".
Be nice if Danaleks is looking into this and perhaps an update on anything being done about it.

I am having similar issues. It often happens if Opera crashes and I went through the crash reporter and restarted the previous session (or sometimes when I hit the green button to maximize) it introduces invisible windows. These windows show up in the menu->Window list but are not visible. Over time (multiple crashes and similar behavior, this list of open windows in menu->Window grows to a ridiculous size and I have to lose all session history by starting a new session next time Opera crashes.
For now, to avoid this, whenever Opera crashes, I choose to send the crash report BUT NOT automatically restart Opera. Once the crash report is done I make sure there are no Opera processes running (force quite if I have to) and then restart Opera from the last session.
I am on 10.53 and snowleopard + intel.

Hi ChoppedBroccoli,
You can look at an "invisible" page by selecting it in the Windows menu and then pressing Option-F11. But you are then limited with what you can do.
When the window list gets too long, go into About Opera to find out where the "autopera.win" file is stored, quit Opera and delete the file. When Opera restarts it will create a new file and for the first session press CMD-N for a new window if it doesn't show automatically. No need to re-install Opera. (Until we get a new version without this problem.)

I'll try the option + F11 next time, though I'm not quite sure what you mean.
I don't reinstall Opera for the record, I force quite Opera after I load it next which allows me to see the options for restarting sessions the next time I open Opera - that way I can start a new or saved session that did not have the invisible windows.
Hi, seems you've found a workaround but it would be better to have it fixed.
I've downloaded Opera 10.60 build 8362 today. It has a nice feel to it and "Close all but Active Tabs" is working better. However, the same problem with windows as previously described still exists. The default on loading Opera for the first time seems to be a window that is slightly smaller than the screen. Pressing the green button makes the window fill the screen. (At least on my screen.) I then quit Opera and restart. It now starts with the window filling the screen (Menu bar is still showing, this is not with Opt-F11 selected.) as it was when I quit. But now, when I press the green button, the window disappears. This should only happen when the red button is pressed. The window is still listed under the Window menu and can be ticked but it cannot be viewed unless one selects Opt-F11 and this loses considerable functionality.
Could be a problem with how windows are managed.

alanrich, I am not able to reproduce the problem you are experiencing. I have tried following everything you have posted but I don't see the same problem.
Could you please try reproducing it from your system’s Guest account (enabled under System Preferences: Users).
If you could come up with step-by-step instructions outlining how we can reproduce it we can look into what is causing this and maybe sneak in a fix in Opera 10.6

I have this problem too, on my 4 year old MacBook Pro running Leopard (10.5.8). I haven't quite nailed the cause, but it have happend twice when I've hit the '+'-button to reduce the size of a maximized window. What I think happen is that the window is resized to width=0 and height=0, and becomes "invisible". At least my .win-file will have w=0 and h=0 for those windows.
I posted a bug-report (DSK-300425) about this and attached / sent my .win-file to the bug-mail-address.

I have been having this problem pre-10.6 too. dont know how, why or what causes it, it just comes after awhile. only way to solve the problem is to kill it.
havent seen it happen with the new alpha though. pressing the green button, opera fills up the screen, then launching expose made the problem.
restoring, quit opera, restart, and maximize, problem gone! =S

Hi,
For Chopped brocolli: To remove the "invisible" windows click on the "Window" menu and select one of the invisible windows. Press CMD-W and the selected window is closed. Different from closing tabs which doesn't close windows.
For Daniel: sorry, I haven't had time to try duplicating the problem in the Guest User account. Problem still there in 8366. For me on a Mac G5 running OS 10.5.8 the procedure for producing this problem is:
Download Opera (latest), install, run, maximise window by pressing green button, quit Opera. Reload Opera which now starts with a maximized window. Press the green button. Instead of returning to its previous size, it disappears. It may be that Opera is not storing previous window co-ordinates and so defaults to 0,0 as haakoo suggests.

Just an update on invisible windows - this happens even without crashes on 10.6 just by using the green button.
