By the way you're not using "Opera USB" are you? (I think that's the only time I've seen this happen) if that's the case... well, you probably won't get help from here since it's not an official releases from Opera.
What happens if you open the file it puts on your desktop? (Bookmark Manager - File - Open...) are the bookmarks you imported in it? If so, what happens if you copy that file to the locations specified in either of those two links? (while Opera is closed).

Eh? So how are you trying to add those bookmarks into Opera? It sounds to me like all you are doing it opening an HTML page full of links...
The "correct" way to import is to:
Click Red "O" for the opera menu
Select "Settings" from the menu
Select "Import and export" from the sub-menu
Now choose the relevant import type, and point at your bookmarks file. This should suck it into Opera permanently.

I am doing it the correct way the first time i converted it to an adr file and then imported them into Opera, the second time i did the import Firefox bookmarks as HTML. Neither one will stay and now it leaves an adr file on my desktop when i open Opera even though there aren't any bookmarks in Opera. I was just saying that i could drag the file into Opera and it shows all my bookmarks which is usually what happens when you try to drag a bookmarks file into a browser.
You haven't said which OS you are on.
In Vista\Win7 your Bookmarks file should be appearing in %appdata%\roaming\opera\opera\bookmarks.adr (Or on XP that is %appdata%\opera\opera\bookmarks.adr). Check there is nothing unusual at that location with file rights, etc. Is there a bookmarks.adr file there? Try opening with Notepad to check what is in it.
I am not sure if there is anything in opera:config that can change where the bookmarks file resides. Look in the Help \ About Opera menu (or click this link opera:about) and check where Opera thinks your bookmarks are. (A question Vectronic asked and I notice you have not replied...)

I'm using Windows XP, I've not changed anything just the basic Opera 10.53.

Okay - you are on XP. What about the other suggestions in my post? Where does the About page say your bookmarks are stored?
It says this on the about page for bookmarks: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\opera.adr
I opened the file with notepad and it said this:
Opera Hotlist version 2.0
Options: encoding = utf8, version=3
#FOLDER
ID=24
NAME=Trash
CREATED=1273551820
TRASH FOLDER=YES
DELETABLE=NO
UNIQUEID=14C645A5B8A3470FB3B52CC32C97E2B8
That explains why it keeps putting it on your desktop, but doesn't explain why it won't keep your bookmarks.
Try looking in C:\documents and settings\owner\application data\opera\opera\bookmarks.adr - does this file exist? And have anything in it?
Do you have other settings files scattered on the desktop in error?
(I don't know where the bookmarks location is set from inside Opera. Have to wait for a file guru to drop by)
I would be worried about other parts of Opera. I have no idea how you managed to get it installed in such an odd way.
I spotted that "Hot List File Ver2" in the opera:config, but it was such a weird name that I assumed this was referring to something else.
So, as Vectronic pointed out in the first reply, you can now correct this variable to:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Opera\Opera\bookmarks.adr"
And everything should start working as normal again for you.

I believe this has fixed it thanks. Now if i could just get my "hide file types opened with Opera" box to stay unchecked in advanced preferences everything with Opera should be working fine.

Now that you seem to have it working, it might be a good idea to:
A. Make a back-up (of Opera/Profile not your entire PC)
B. Remember this, or write it down somewhere.
C. Disable Multi-User accounts (I'll describe if necessary, simplifies hunting and gathering)
D. Become more familiar with how Opera works.
E. All of the above.
I assume that you are either using Opera for web development/testing, just experimentation, or possibly gave up on Firefox... in any case, it's wise to include information about which Opera version you are using, and what operating system, when asking for help.

Why do you need to? This is not like Windows file types being visible in explorer. This is just a list of which file types are handled by the browser, and how.
You rarely need to go to that Opera dialog to change these settings, so the few times you do go there - you untick the box to see everything. Most of the time there is no need to change anything in here.
(Personally I only fiddle with the PDF handling to make it offer me a dialog box instead of using the Adobe Plug... but that is just personal choice)

It's the only way i can listen to XM radios online stream. Sometimes it will even check back while i'm still using the browser. Here is the other thread where i posted asking for help with this problem.
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=544501
For whatever reason, if that in fact does inhibit streaming media, maybe try finding out what format XM streams their broadcasts in, and edit the settings for that type.
Otherwise, if this is reproducible (happens often, or <i>always</i> on your PC, and especially if someone else can confirm it) then maybe report it as a bug if you haven't already.

No, the only way would be to not close the Preference dialog. I believe that the checkbox isn't tied to any settings at all programmatically, it simply toggles an attribute of the listview items themselves. (sort of like, when you scroll a website in your browser, it's not scrolling it on the server it came from... it's not "attached" in any way)

It streams with Windows media player. It would always work with the other versions of Opera without having to uncheck anything and it works automatically in other browsers.
If you are asking about reporting the WMP/"Hide file types opened with Opera" thing... you might want to:
A: Try upgrading to <a href="http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2010/05/12/unix-bug-fixes">10.54</a>.
B: Search the forums (more than just one search), and see if anyone else has mentioned it and/or reported it.
C: Make sure that's the actual problem.
D: If there's no topics, and you are sure, create a new topic about it (and that alone) in Opera Browser, or Beta Testing sections.
E: If/when someone else confirms it, then report it.
If you are talking about Bookmarks, that's already been reported, and likely already fixed.

I'm talking about keeping the advanced preferences downloads box unchecked and getting it to stay unchecked.
(I have now unsubscribed from this thread, mainly because of your annoying bumping)

Of course it is not a bug. That is just a tick box to allow clarity on that dialog page. With the box ticked, it is then quick to see which external programs handle which file extension. Unticking it just displays the Opera Defaults in that dialog. That tick box does not change any settings itself.

Apparently it does because the player works when i uncheck the box.
