Opera mini 5--is there an option to make the speed dial in text rather than thumbnails(like OM4

Hello,

Thank you for providing Opera Mini and Opera Mobile to mobile phone users free of charge. I really appreciate that.

There are certainly some nice improvements in Opera Mini 5. The interface is certainly nicer-looking.

However, on two screens that I use it on, Sony-Ericsson TM506, and HP IPAQ 910C, both of which have small screens, the thumbnails of web pages on your start page Fast Dials are too difficult to see what they are, on that small screen. They also take more time to load.

I know you do that to replicate the look of desktop Opera. That is fine for a large computer screen. Perhaps it is OK for a phone with a large screen, such as the Iphone and others.

For a phone with a small screen, the text listing of the Fast Dials, as in OM4, was much better.

Is there an option to set it back to text listing of the fast dials, rather than the thumbnails? If so, please tell me how to do it. (I could not find that in Settings.) Is there a registry tweak i could do, which would make that change for me?

If that option is not there, I would suggest you add it to the next build. Users should have that choice. Some might prefer the new look of OM5, with the thumbnails, closer to the look of desktop Opera. Others like me, however, especially those whose phones have smaller screens, might prefer the text listing for fast dial, rather than the thumbnails. (Please make that change also in the WM version, which i installed on the IPAQ.)

One thing too--when i installed OM 5 beta, it did not overwrite OM4, and I had the option to use either. When I installed OM5 final, it overwrote OM4, and did not give me a choice to keep it. If I am not able to fix the fast dial problem in OM5, I might like to have OM4 again. (While keeping OM5 as well.) Is there a way to reinstall OM4, without having it wipe out OM5?

------------------------

By the way, on the iPAQ, I have also installed the new Opera Mobile 10. (Seems very similar to the WM version of OM5. It seems like what were two different products are now converging into one. Correct?) Anyhow, with that I have the same problem, of not being able to discern well the thumbnail fast dials on the start page. I would suggest the same thing as I suggested for OM5--have an option to see those fast dials as text listings rather than thumbnails.)

Thank you.

Unfortunately there is no way to display them as text. I agree with you, I would like that option too. The small section of the screen is not much help to me. I have Google's reader, Voice, Gmail and Search screens on my speed dial page. The only way to know which speed dial to use is to memorize memorize them.

Well,Opera, are you listing?

On small phone screens the speed dial thumbnails are difficult or impossible to discern. It would be nice to have the option of a simple text listing, as in OM4.

People have been asking for this since the first beta. They may get around to it. The reason for the icons is they're "easier" for touch screen phone users. *shrug* for what it's worth, I'd prefer a list view, also.

It depends on the size of the touchscreen. If it is not readable, it is not "easier".

Let the user decide, which way he or she wants it.

In the meantime, is it possible to reinstall OM4, while keeping OM5 as well?

How, H82typ?

As I reported, when i installed OM5 beta, OM4 remained on the phone as well, and one had the option of using either.

However, when I installed OM5 Final, it overwrote OM4.There was no option to keep both.

Reinstall OM4. It has been renamed so that it won't be overwritten by OM5.

I personally never cared about speed dial appearance. The only way I ever use them is by the shortcuts.

Me too, but now I can't tell which one is which unless I memorize them.

Maybe the Speed Dials could be more useful if Mini just took the favicon of the site instead of getting a snapshot of a random part of a website? If that doesn't sound good, then maybe have an option where if you "long press" an image on a website, you can have Mini snapshot the area where the image is?

...Perhaps a mockup of these ideas would be better to see what would work in Opera Mini?

Just think you have one GMail account and one Google Apps email account on speed dials. Unless you memorize, you will never know which one is which.
Well if you can memorize them, there's no need for speed dial display on front page, right ?

i like the simple text labels of OM4 the best.

Each user may have a preference, which might depend on the size of his or her screen.

My suggestion--give the user the choice.

This would also apply to the various versions of Opera Mobile, as they all seem to have a very similar interface now.

For now, is there a way one could hack it,to get the text-based start page back?

On the other hand #4 is useful to delete the cache.

It looks like developers decided not to support non touch mobiles any more. We have a workaround to use Bolt. It has just what you want - the list of bookmarks on the title screen that can be reorganized.

What do you mean? Bookmarks can't be sorted on touch screen mobiles in Opera Mini either. It's just a feature that didn't make the cut in this release. Nothing to do with touch vs non-touch.

Just came back to this thread.

Will this be fixed in the next release of OM5? An option to have text-based speed dials (as in OM4) rather than the images of part of the page?

Although I am not a programmer, that would seem to be a simple thing to implement. Let the user decide!

Until that time, isn't there some kind of workaround? Is there a change that could be made on a config file, using a text editor, to get back the text-based speed dials?

Where is the OM5 home page located? Is it a file? Can it be replaced with a different one, that does have text labels?

You've been heard smile

The new OM 5.1 includes just what you asked, removes the thumbnails of the speed dials (and puts respective text instead) and also removes the humongous pictures in the menu for downloads, saved pages etc. and generally slims down the interface on low-memory phones (like my Nokia 6300 S40), try it smile

(also there's the new shortcut *0 for mobile a.k.a no-horizontal-scrolling view)
