Don't switch to new tab when created
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere but I have searched and couldn't find anything specific. (Also, new user so forgive my Opera ignorance)When I open a link in a new tab, is there an option to not immediately switch to it ?

Use middle-click or ctrl shift click to open the link, or right-click, open in background tab. Or add a mouse gesture to do the same
