Opera 10.52 and 10.53 crash twice at every start, then work
Hi,I'm using Mac OS 10.4, intel. Since upgrading to Opera 10.52 (and meanwhile 10.53), the following happens always:
- I start Opera and it crashs. I get a message from the OS that Opera crashed and if I want to send a report or if I want to open Opera again ("Erneut öffnen" - German here).
- I choose to open Opera again and I get another message saying that Opera crashed again, and if I want to send a report or if I want to try again ("Erneut versuchen").
- I choose to try again and suddenly Opera works.
This also happens always:
- When I close Opera, I get a message that the settings were changed (whether I changed anything or not) and I'm asked if I want to use the new or keep the old settings.
Also once, when I used a form on a website, Opera couldn't be used for a few minutes (as if it was busy, but I didn't do anything that could cause it to be busy other than typing into a text field).
I've not only upgraded but also tried a clean install after deleting Opera and relevant files in Library (keeping just some renamed as recommended here: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=550381&t=1272887582&page=1#comment5342131 ).
I really used to like Opera best of all browsers but I cannot work this way. I hope you find a solution soon. It seems that many Mac users have trouble with the new versions.

It just took me fifteen seconds and a beach ball to copy that "quote" thing with your name, and again as much to paste it (with another beach ball).
If you open the activity monitor, you'll see Opera is hogging all of the CPU ressources.
The main windows say "Opera is not responding". Fortunately, it doesn't freeze completely, but it's a drag.
This happens on my Mac [G5 PPC running OS 10.4.11] for all keyboard commands, including shutting windows and opening new tabs.
While the same actions are instantaneous with the mouse.
There must be a reason for that…
A clean install has done it for me - no more crashes -, but the slowness, keyboard action delay and beach balls have not been cured.
I hope a solution can be found too…

On my account, Opera 10.53 appears to be working properly. However, 3 other accounts on the system exhibit the failure previously described.
It is possible to click through to get to a viable browser session. However, when Opera 10.53 is closed it throws a dialogue about using new or old settings. It doesn't matter which option is taken, the next time Opera is started it will crash and it's the same broken sequence.

I've tried a local installation on one of the affected user accounts but it doesn't change the crash sequence.

1. Backup your computer (for example using Time Machine)
2. Download the snapshot and run it
3. If it works properly, try right-clicking Opera and choose Show Package Contents
4. Go to Contents/Resources/ and delete the file PrefsSuffix
5. Run it again (this will upgrade your install, bringing back bookmarks and settings)
Please report back if any of your are still encountering problems.
However, there seems to be another problem with the quick preferences: Sometimes I can't change the settings.
An example: I had configured Opera to only accept cookies. Opera is off. I start Opera and the speed dial opens. I can switch on and off cookie accepting using the quick preferences menu. This is expected behaviour. Now, unexpectedly, if I open http://www.opera.com/ using the address bar, I can't change the cookie setting using the quick preferences menu anymore. However, if I start Opera and open http://www.opera.com/ using the speed dial (where I have http://www.opera.com/ as one speed dial option) I still can change the cookie setting using the quick preferences menu. If I then open another (speed dial) tab, I can't toggle the setting in the quick preferences again.
I don't think this is cookie specific. I also can't change Javascript support and other quick preference options then.
