Why does Opera try to act as a server?

Hi,

On my MS Vista PC my firewall (ZoneAlarm) informs me that Opera attempts "to act as a server" right after starting Opera. I am not downloading torrents and features like Opera Turbo, Unite, Link aren't activated. I'm not using Opera for mail. I deny and get the message that Opera "wants to accept connections from the internet". I deny again.

Denying these connections apparently doesn't affect my normal browsing with Opera.

What is Opera trying to do there on start up? I'm unhappy about a program that sends any information to the internet without asking me first.

Regards
Zuiop

I'm having the same problem and posted an inquiry also: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=620552

Seeing no replies to your question has me concerned.

Unite does that, even if you're not using it. Disable Unite, and that should stop although Opera will still ask to be server if you use Opera to download torrents. To disable Unite, you need to set "Enable Unite" in opera:config to 0. Instructions here: http://www.opera.com/support/mastering/sysadmin/#disable-unite

Just been reading about the Facebook debacle, and feel that Unite should run an article just to clear things up for opera fans? I hope i am right in thinking Opera Unite gives me total control over access to my unite website, While still announcing itself to the web? If it does not it should do PDQ!

I want Unite to be the alternative to Facebook and Second Life etc by providing services that unite individual computers but without storing the personal information on those computers, acting like as true server which denies access to everyone that has not subscribed to my Unite home page, or who i have nor welcomed in. Reminds me of Vampire Lore:D .

Any way i am looking forward to the Avatar app i asked developers to produce? Then maybe Opera ASA can host the streets and cities that will develop from these little individual Unite home spaces .

Hey if it catches on Opera might even get into the virtual building trade and build free or rentable virtual Condos by the virtual Hawaian Ocean.

Got to go. SURFS UP!wizard
