You can't. First they forced this on us, and when we got used to it, and reverted back. Without any explanation whatsoever.

Since i remember it worked just like in O10.53. They changed it for versions 10.50/51/52(?).
But i like it the way it works in the 53 because i have control over the way it opens pages.
In current tab by default, in new tab with shift, in new background tab with ctrl+shift

What nonsense! It was a bug introduced in 10.51 and fixed in 10.52.

You can choose to open a search in the same tab (if "reuse current tab" is checked), or override that setting by holding down shift when clicking on the search. If "reuse current tab" is not checked, the search will always open in a new tab. Hold down ctrl and shift to open it in a background tab.

Opera 10.1 also opens a right-click search in a new tab unless you enable "Reuse current tab" in Preferences, Tabs — just like the current version 10.54.

AFAIK it was Opera 10.51 that introduced a bug whereby search would open in a new tab even with "Reuse current tab" enabled. That bug was fixed in 10.53.

No one should use an earlier version than 10.54. Security updates are important.

Security Fixes
  • Prevented Opera from being used as a vector for a font issue in the underlying operating system, as reported by Microsoft's security team; see our advisory (http://www.opera.com/support/search/view/954/).
  • Fixed an extremely severe issue; details will be disclosed at a later date.
  • Fixed a highly severe issue; details will be disclosed at a later date.
  • Fixed a moderately severe issue; details will be disclosed at a later date.
  • Fixed a less severe issue; details will be disclosed at a later date.

Note that these quick keys (ctrl & ctrl+shift) work with most actions you can imagine, like going to an address by typing.
