Fundamentalist Muslims flip out over a cartoon (again)

Yet again, radical fundamentalist Muslims have flipped out over a depiction of their Prophet Muhammad.
This time is was over a South Park episode depicting Muhammad being in a group of notable religious icons called the "Super Best Friends". The Super Best Friends is a group of major religious figures including Jesus, Buddha, Moses, Joseph Smith, Krishna, Lao Tzu, Muhammad and Sea Man (which the other characters jokingly pronounce as "Semen") who defend the world against evil (except for Buddha who doesn't really believe in evil). As is known to anyone who has ever watched an episode of South Park, they are very equal opportunity to whom/what they poke fun at or make fun of.

This is not the first time Muhammad has appeared in a South Park episode, yet this most recent episode has garnered the most attention. In 2005, cartoon depictions of Muhammad became controversial during the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy. The creators of South Park returned to this theme in later episodes, parodying censorship attempts. The 2006 episode Cartoon Wars Part II contained an image of Muhammad, however this was removed by Comedy Central before airing. The 2010 episode 200 contained a "depiction" of Muhammad inside a bear-suit, which, in the next episode, was revealed to be Santa, and further controversy ensued, with one group, "Revolution Muslim", warning that South Park's creators would "probably wind up like Theo van Gogh". Around this time, the original Super Best Friends episode was removed from the South Park Studios website, though it can still be viewed in the Canadian Comedy Central website.

So the question is, why does Comedy Central continue to censor Muhammad? We in the West are not under Sharia Law, and as we are guaranteed Freedom of Speech, we should not have to censor an ancient myth just to appease a bunch of fanatics who adhere to an ancient book of literature.

It is believed that a failed car bomb in New York was the result of this most recent episode depicting Muhammad.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/7671750/South-Park-The-most-dangerous-show-on-television.html
"Although details remain unclear, one possibility being investigated by police is that the bomb was placed near the New York headquarters of South Park's owners, Viacom, by angry Islamists in revenge for the cartoon series' irreverent treatment of their prophet Mohammed."
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/22/south-park-mohammed-censo_n_547484.html

Please pardon the shouting, but IT'S A FREAKIN CARTOON!!!! faint faint faint

Was Comedy Central right in censoring the image of Muhammad?

Publish some more mohammed cartoons and hope these <censored> get a collective heart attack and let natural selection run its course right
Last time I checked that 'ban' on depictions of the guy ( or recognizable people in general ) was a mere suggestion and applies to muslims only. It's not like there are no pictures of him made by muslims.

Having a copyright doesn't exempt something from ridicule either. Besides, you can't exactly copyright not depicting something. p

Islamic countries, which enforcing Sharia Laws (aka God's law). When you get accused sued & failed to prove your innocent found guilty of a crime known as Blasphemy, the punishment is DEATH. rip
But it seems the latest trend is blow you up into pieces before the trial... instead of stoned you to death.
They already copyright "Allah", so if you mention that word in any Islamic county, you're dead meat.

I am not mocking anyone's religion.
I am pointing out the absolute ridiculousness of fundamentalism.

I am no Muslim, nor am I bound by any Islamic law. Islamic law applies only to Muslims, and as such, if I want to spray paint a picture of Muhammad on a local wall, that is my inherent right to do so. When one lives in a democracy, freedoms are granted to you. Fundie Muslims do not seem to grasp that anyone in the West has a right to make fun of any thing, any religion, any religious leader, any political leader, any celebrity, etc.

This goes back to one of my main issues with the 3 Abrahamic religions: if any one of the 3 were the official religion of the US, we'd damn well be living like we were in the 7th century or earlier. To that I say, No Thank you.

In 2008 there were 34,017 traffic fatalities in the U.S. Imagine if Muslims were responsible for 100 of those deaths.

Religion never did get a whole lot of respect on these boards. Nothing new there, and no less than Jesus told us long ago to expect this kind of response. Muhammad probably said something similar, but since I've never read the Quran I can't say for sure.

One thing is for sure: If you want respect for your particular set of beliefs, I don't think I would go about it by setting up car bombs and encouraging children to blow themselves up for the glory of the faith. That only makes adherents to your beliefs seem like raving lunatics, and lunatics never get any respect. Plenty of fear maybe, but no respect. (Quickie note: The Christian religion has had more than its fair share of raving lunatics, and they don't help get the message of Christ out at all. They hinder it more than all the enemies of the faith could ever hope for.)

A Muslim telling non-muslims what they can or can't draw a picture of is like a Hindu person telling a Muslim not to eat beef because it's against Hinduism. It's not the intent, it's the scope. There is a BIG difference between enforcing religious edicts on people within a religion and trying to force people of other religions to adhere to your personal belief system.

That's not OK either. Ex-Muslims are widely harassed by their "friends" for trying to leave the religion. The same happens with Christians, but that's more psychological and less physical. I suppose you could say that's also covered by this, but it reads too much like "they can have the sharia among themselves" to me, and that's just not the case.

Tell you something Macallan. I don't care what you think of me. And I have nothing to prove to you. Maybe all might sound as entertainment to you. Then, I think the idea of posting nonsense to increase the number of post, is really not cool!

On the other hand one might think a certain individual lacks religious conviction and trying to fill the emptiness inside will attack religion. Such people need a prayer. All the books in the world won't make you believe!

See, so much nonsense. Methinks hypocrisy comes with religion in way too many cases.
What good are convictions you can't support? Obviously you can't support yours. Instead you keep spewing nonsense and childish personal attacks.

Yup. Cars kill. This car just happened to kill nobody, and the NYC cops made sure it won't kill in the future. A victory for humanity.

This fellow has been arrested as the suspect in the failed bombing attempt in NYC in front of Comedy Central's NY office:

"Shahzad, a newly naturalised US citizen, has three university degrees, including an MBA. He recently visited Pakistan, where police confirmed that he came from Nazimabad, a middle-class neighbourhood in Karachi. Officials said that Shahzad arrived in Pakistan on 3 July last year and left in early August. During that trip he reportedly travelled to Peshawar, on the edge of the tribal belt where the army is fighting the Taliban."

Exactly!

Southpark and it's creators love to insult different races, religions, sexes, nationalities, and cultural groups for shock value. If you're uptight and don't like that kind of humor then don't watch it.

Muhammad should not have been censored in that episode. Don't you think dressing him up in a bear suit is more insulting anyway?

I'm sure there are many devout christians out there who aren't happy with the way they portray jesus...yet he still made his usual appearance.

I think the creators were playing on the Muhammad teddy bear incident that almost cost a teacher her Head.
