Update for danaleks on Tiger/PPC Opera 10.5 and 10.10 won't start
After again fully restoring my hard drive yesterday, Opera 10.10 worked. This morning when I turned the G4 MDD running Tiger 10.4.11, Opera would not start.I read this:
You could try to reset Opera by deleting:
~/Library/Application Support/Opera/
~/Library/Caches/Opera/
~/Library/Preferences.com.operasoftware.Opera.plist
~/Library/Preferences/Opera Preferences/
and here's what I've learned this morning.
1. For me, on my fully restored hard drive which now has Opera 10.10, only Opera Preferences and com.operasoftware.Opera.plist are in ~/Library/Preferences. The rest are in my USER LIBRARY.
2. In my User Library are Application Support/Opera, Library/Caches/Opera/(modified yesterday at 12:49) AND also inside Library/Caches a folder you did not list called "Opera Caches" (modified 4/15/2008!!!!). See attached caches jpeg.
The problem is with "Caches/Opera" because Opera will not open when that file is in place. If I remove "Caches/Opera", however, and replace it with "Opera Caches" (which has not been modified since 4/15/2008!) , Opera will work. In the 10.5 series, did "Caches/Opera" replace "Opera Caches"?
I hope this helps you to solve the problem. And about iGlasses, my guess is that "Caches/Opera" somehow interferes with that.
Now for questions:
1. In my trash are folders called Opera Cache, Opera, Opera 10-06-43, Opera Preferences, Opera 10-30-07, and Opera 10-31-15, and the plist file. I used the contents of Opera 10-06-43 to restore my mail accounts, etc.
The folder Opera 10-31-15 is full of icons and thumbnails and I don't know where to put those. Any help on this?
Seriously, I think the problem, for PPC 10.4.11 at least, is that "Caches/Opera" folder that seems to have replaced "Opera Caches". "Opera Caches" allows the program to work, it seems and Opera will not work when "Caches'Opera" interferes.
Please, please do what you can to help resolve this situation.

thurletta, ~/Library *is* your user library; /Library would be one of the system libraries. "~" is the old, csh-style shortcut to refer to a user's home directory.
I have never had a "~/Library/Caches/Opera Caches" folder, I'm typing this in Opera 10.10, and have a ~/Library/Caches/Opera folder. There is however another Cache folder inside that folder.

Well, I guess I meant the other folders were in my system, not user, library. The main thing is that they were in two different places. On the G4, I do have that Opera Caches folder, but it is not on this MacBook running 10.10 that I never upgraded. Strange.

We have a new development snapshot which should fix most of the problems users have had with startup crashers.
http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2010/05/05/startup-crashes-be-gone
1. Backup your computer (for example using Time Machine)
2. Download the snapshot and run it
3. If it works properly, try right-clicking Opera and choose Show Package Contents
4. Go to Contents/Resources/ and delete the file PrefsSuffix
5. Run it again (this will upgrade your install, bringing back bookmarks and settings)
Please report back if any of your are still encountering problems.

Moving Opera 10.10 from Apps to Utilities and running it from an alias inside Apps resurrects Opera 10.10 AND iGlasses. I'm not updating to 10.5.3 since so many PPC folks running Tiger 10.4.11 are complaining about memory, speed, etc.

Fixing Opera 10.53 'Not Working!' problem with 10.4.11 PPC
Fixed it like this!
Open the Opera Universal .DMG file and DO NOT DRAG THE OPERA PROGRAM TO THE 'APPLICATIONS' FOLDER instead DRAG IT TO YOUR 'DESKTOP'!
'Double click' on this to Run it, to prove that it works.
I then found that if I moved it to the 'Applications' folder it would not work, so place it in the 'Utilities' folder and then make an alias of it.
Move the alias to the 'Applications' folder now use the alias or the 'Dock' item and it should Run.
This would seem to suggest some permission problem with 10.53 for the Mac

Deleting the Caches folder (as described above) would solve this problem. It was caused by a broken auto-updater shipped with an earlier version of Opera.
This was a full download from the Opera site and not just an update.
The permissions for the disk passed fine.
It seems to be a problem for all our 3 G5 macs and 2 G4s.

Ditto for me...downloaded full update from the Opera site to my G4 MDD running Tiger 10.4.11. Now I'm back to 10.10 and have to trash the ~/Library/Caches/Opera/ folder every couple of days to keep Opera running. I have not attempted to update my MacBook running 10.5.8 and probably never will. Opera is still my browser/mail-client of choice, but gee whiz....all of this drama is extremely traumatic.
