Java doesn't work.

I have the latest Java version for a Windows ME computer, which is 1.5.0_22. For some reason, Java won't work. Java is activated, but whenever I go on a site that needs Java, a box appears and it says that it needs a java plugin. Please help.

if an uninstall/reinstall of java don't fix it then that means that site or so does not allow the old java to work.

What Opera version are you using? The Opera 10.5x family no longer directly interfaces with the Java jre installation files, but instead will only interface with the plug-in for the Sun Java 1.6.x family - which Java version, as it turns out, is not compatible with Win98 OS's. If you're using the 10.5x Opera family, you've run up against another obsolescence issue involving the aging Win98 OS. The 10.5x Opera versions will work themselves with Win98, but require installation of a newer Java version that does not. So the choice at hand becomes: abandon Win98, use Firefox for Java needs, or use an older Opera version - such as 9.64 - that will still work with Java 1.5.0.22 for Java sites (which is my personal choice, leaving it installed side-by-side with Opera 10.53, for just such sites).
Opera 12.14u (1738), 11.52 (1100) & 10.63 (3576) running on various Windows systems from Win7-64 down through KernelEx4-modified Win98FE (proof that reports of Win98's demise are greatly exaggerated).

I'm running Opera 10.53 on XP (all service packs etc) and the latest Java 1.6.0_20, and Java does not work sad(
Java is just greyed out in the Tools menu
I even removed all my JRE installations and reinstalled only the latest - still doesn't work.
It works fine in IE, which makes it even more frustrating !

It sounds as though Opera isn't finding (or enabling) the Java plug-in file.
1. Do a file search on your system to locate the Java plug-in file: npjp2.dll
2. Make sure that one copy of that file resides in the plug-in folder specified within Opera under the Plugin Path at opera:config#User%20Prefs ; make sure that no other Java npjp file versions/copies exist in that folder.
3. Verify that the correct path to the Java plug-in exists in opera:plugins
4. Make sure that the Java plug-in is enabled on the system: Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Java plug-in enabled
5. Make sure Java is enabled within Opera: Preferences > Advanced > Content > "Enable plug-ins" checked
6. Verify Java is enabled within the Prefs Editor file: opera:config#Java (Java enabled)

There is only one npjp2.dll file on my system, and it is located in the correct path.
Here is the Java part of my opera:plugins.
Java is enabled, and plugin is enabled in the Java control panel.
But "Use Java" is still greyed out.
Strange thing is that some Java pages seems to work, but not all.
Those that doesn't work now used to work before, and they still work fine in IE, which makes me suspect that sometimes is wrong with this Opera version.

Unfortunately, the only system up and running for me at the moment is this Win98 computer - which will not accept the Java 1.6.0.20 version, so I cannot use the npjp2.dll plug-in to test the site. (My XP system is down right now.) When I go to the website you listed, using Opera 10.10 and an older Java 1.5.0.22b03 version on this Win98 system, it did indeed run the Java properly for the site. I realize that doesn't help you much to find a solution, but it does confirm that the site does seem to be running correctly with an older Opera/Java version combination. Perhaps someone else will come along here with additional suggestions for you to try.

Thanks for checking it out smile
1. It works fine on older Opera/Java
2. It works fine with Java 1.6.0.20 and Firefox 3.6.3
3. It works fine with Java 1.6.0.20 and IE8
4. It works fine with Java 1.6.0.20 and Chrome 5.0.375.55
5. It works fine with Java 1.6.0.20 and Chrome 5.0.375.70
6. It does not work with Java 1.6.0.20 and Opera 10.53 !!!

I can't see that it could be any others fault than Opera and/or my Opera setup (which looks ok)?

Could anyone take a look to see if it (Java) works on their Opera setup?
http://sapmi.uit.no/sapmi/ExhibitionStart.do?language=engelsk
or if it is a problem with my Opera/Java setup?
As mentioned before - it works fine in IE and other browsers, but not in Opera 10.53
At the same time many other Java pages works fine here in Opera 10.53.

Well, first thing to check is http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1
If java & Opera works there, then surely the problem is on the site and not in Opera/java.

I have the same problem: java grayed...(Opera 10.60 + jre6u20), and Java really does not work (checked here: http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1). If the problem is not in the settings imported during installation from Opera 9.64 (all Java options in browser and necessary files rechecked), then problem is Opera 10.60.

Well, the java check works for me. However, Opera 10 now uses the java plug-in - not the "automatic method" used in earlier versions.
Check that it is listed in opera:plugins and that you haven't disabled plug-ins.

G'day all - just my 2¢ worth --

The test site works perfectly for me, but o I am using 9.51 in W2K Pro. Here's my plugin:
Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.200.2
        application/java-deployment-toolkit
        C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\Plugins\npdeployJava1.dll

Just as a pot-stirrer, the smartest thing I ever did with my computers was to abandon 9.x/ME and install W2K Pro. love But there's no way I'm putting 10.x on this machine, especially 10.60 -- too many dramas.
