Can't set Opera to default without a pain.
This is really odd.For no apparent reason, Opera 10.53 decided it was not going to be my default browser, even though I had it set as such. I used to get a message telling me it was not the default browser upon startup, but it won't anymore.
When it started doing this, I tried reinstalling it, this resulted in the same thing, plus it would tell me I needed to install Adobe Flash to see videos on YouTube. I installed it, and it just kept telling me it wasn't installed. So, I uninstalled it, deleted any leftover files and registry keys I could find, defragmented my hard drive, and tried again.
Now, I still can't get it to set to default, but Adobe Flash was able to download itself automatically this time. Using older versions of Opera does the same thing now.
The only way I can get it to set to default is to go to Control Panel> Default Programs> Set your default programs> Opera Web Browser> choose defaults for this program. Then, I set everything to be opened with Opera that is normally opened with a Web Browser (.htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml, ftp, etc.)
I'm glad I got it working again, but what was going on?
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit. AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6Ghz processor, 6GB of DDR-2 RAM. I just bought this computer three months ago. I noticed that when I click Help>"About Opera", it says the System is Windows XP, and the platform is Win32. Is that info for my machine or the one Opera was designed on? It shows the paths for my machine after that.
I should add that when checking Opera for compatibility issues, Windows 7 will recommend running it in compatibility mode for "Windows XP, Service Pack 2" Actually Windows 7 does this for the vast majority of programs, even some like C-Cleaner (www.piriform.com) which is certified by Microsoft to run in Windows 7, 64-bit. But changing Opera's compatibility to WinXP, SP2 does make it work a lot better.
