Silverlight support?

Does Opera support Silverlight? I noticed that Microsoft's Silverlight website reports that Silvelight isn't installed if I use Opera, and Netflix also tells me Opera is incompatible with their instant streaming video service. What's the plan for adding Silverllight support to Opera (and getting Netflix to support Opera?)?

Other way around, doll. But as long as you "Right-click > Edit Site Preferences... > Network > Mask as Firefox" and use the latest version of Silverlight, everything should be fine. And I think there are some other work workarounds on these very forums, if you search for them.

Masked as Firefox, but again, Opera isn't loading the Silverlight plugin. No Silverlight works at all in Opera, and I've got the latest version (4.x).

The other thing is, "masking" shouldn't be necessary. Opera needs to improve their developer relations and work with Netflix to make Opera compatible without modification.

[joke] The only two sites in the whole web to use Silverlight are Netflix.com and Microsoft.com, maybe it's because of this. [/joke]

Anyway, you should've read the System Requirements page:

What are the system requirements to watch movies instantly on my PC or Mac?

You must have a computer running Windows or Mac OS X and an active broadband connection to the Internet.
Windows requirements: Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or higher; Windows Vista; Windows 7; Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher or Firefox 2 or higher; 1.2 GHz processor; 512 MB RAM.

Mac OS X requirements: an Intel-based Mac with OS 10.4.8 or later; Safari 3 or higher; Firefox 2 or higher; 1 GB RAM.

Well aware of the system requirements. But who wants to switch to IE or Firefox to use a website that Opera probably is technically capable of displaying it on its own? Opera is a far better browser than all the others..

Two things:
1) Opera is compatible. Lazy javascript developers are not. I've been doing web development for the past 10 years and never, ever, had a problem with Opera. Quirks? Yes, it had, back on version 3 (when I started using it). And since version 9, that were things of the past.

2) Silverlight works in Opera. I have it installed and it works fine. I don't know if Netflix works or not. But if I go to http://www.mscui.net/patientjourneydemonstrator/ , it says:
a) Silverlight is installed
b) I can run any of the demonstrations and all work fine.

Wait, how did you get Silverlight to work? I have Silverlight 4 and Opera 10.54 - the Silverlight content says "Install silverlight" ... even http://www.mscui.net/patientjourneydemonstrator/ doesn't work.

additionally, I read in one of the Opera developers blog posts from 2007 that MS and Opera were committed to supporting Silverlight in Opera, it's been 3 years now. lol

See my earlier post. I am using Win 7-64 and have Silverlight 3 working with Opera 10.54. That is something that Explorer 64
cannot do. I am not a fan but need it for some beta testing.

No. In fact, if I check from where Opera is getting it (opera:plugins) I see:
Silverlight Plug-Inapplication/x-silverlight	scr
application/x-silverlight-2
c:\Program Files\Microsoft Silverlight\4.0.50401.0\npctrl.dll

In fact, I have only 2 plugins installed in Opera's folder: "2007 Microsoft Office system" and "PalmSource Package Installer". All the other plugins are being read from their corresponding directories on disk:
* Flash: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32.dll
* Java: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\new_plugin\npdeploytk.dll
* QuickTime: C:\Program Files\QT Lite\Plugins\npqtplugin.dll
* Windows Presentation Foundation: c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Windows Presentation Foundation\NPWPF.dll

All I did was run the Silverlight installer and the above demo sites work fine (you haven't disabled plugins by any chance, e.g. via the F12 menu?)

As I do some Silverlight development myself, I can state that Silverlight does work in Opera, but browser sniffing will always cause problems regardless of the technology used.

I still don't see why it's always been Opera users who have to workaround to get things work on their fav browser. I love Opera and I want to recommend it to my friends so badly but I'm sure with all these plugin problems and Thai words wrapping/breaking problems they wouldn't switch.

Yes, I also don't know why they are not support any microsoft plugins (NPAPI). I hope they will fix this in 10.60.

Thanks Opera as a first step now the latest beta browser (10.60) loads all the microsoft plugins without any registry change (hack) or file copying on Window 7 x64 bit. Good job!!

Kindly take one more step and fix the Opera crashing issue when we navigate to page http://www.iis.net/media/experiencesmoothstreaming1080p
