Oh, like you need to do for favicons? I don't think this is necessary for Widget icons?

Well, Windows does not support PNG for desktop icons, so I was wondering if I need to use an ico as well as png (png for smarter systems).

I don't think so - it is still all done through the opera widget runtime, which does support .png.
