Opera 10.53 failing to launch on 1st gen Mac Mini running OS X 10.4.11 after Opera upgrade

After I upgraded to 10.53, Opera failed to launch. Specifically, clicking on the red O on the dock made it bounce once, briefly expand the dock, and then contract and do nothing. It did not even show up under Activity Monitor. I tried restarting the machine (1st gen PowerPC Mac Mini), it made no difference.

I got a working version of the software by downloading 10.10 via Firefox, and throwing it in the apps folder, replacing the "broken" one. I am not sure what version that I was originally coming from, I only upgraded in the first place because Opera gave me a pop-up with a message that a new version was available. However, I can repeat this behavior at will just by "installing" 10.53: the app immediately stops working until I replace it with an older version.

Does anyone have a clue as to what's going on here? I'll use 10.10 (or whatever the latest version I can get working might be) if I have to, but I'd prefer to stay up to date.
