News from the Flash front - all messed up

I really would like to know, what the heck is wrong with Opera and Flash? My problems started with Opera 10.? and its disability of loading certain flash files, and by now I can't load a youtube video or anything with flash content. In the meantime I tried an assful of de-installers and registry cleaners, reinstalled both Opera and Flash plugin in different versions, emptied Opera's plugin directory completely - I think I tried everything, except for setting my computer on fire.

Whenever I try to load a flash file, all I get is an empty desktop (with no context menu); if the mouse cursor hits the border, a message in the status bar appears: "Please click to download and activate the plugin", but I may click the buttons out of my mouse, and nothing will happen.

I should add: I've installed the three of modern Windows browsers (IE6, Firefox 2/3, Opera10) on my computer, but this profoundly frustrating issue occurs in Opera only.

First, hit <F12> and make sure "Enable Plug-Ins" and "Enable JavaScript" are both checked, as I've made the mistake before of thinking something was wrong with my Plug-In when I had forgotten that I disabled plug-ins. Also make sure you don't have any User Stylesheet loaded or User JavaScript running that might interfere with normal CSS, Flash, or JavaScript.

Sincerely thanks for your quick reply, John, but I'm afraid the problem ain't that easy. My plugins are enabled, my default view mode is 'author', and I passed several unsuccessful experiments with user stylesheets and JS.

Try going to opera:config#Plugin and see if setting are as below:
- Extensions | Plugins - checked;
- User Prefs | Enable On Demand Plugin - unchecked;
- User Prefs | Enable On Demand Plugin Placeholder - unchecked.

Extensions|Plugins is checked, the User Prefs boxes, too. But when I uncheck them, the only effect is that the "click to download and activate" message (see initial post) doesn't appear any more. Is there a config file where the settings are written to (I couldn't find one with FileMon)? If so, I'd post it here for a public check, although I'd rather suspect any file, or registry interferings being responsible for this mess (browser/browser, version/version, double dll's, ...)

Look at operaprefs.ini in your ${Opera Directory}; specifically this section:

[Extensions]
Plugin Failed Warning=1
Scripting=1
Plugins=1

Scripting is for Javascript. Plugins is for plug-ins. Guess you prolly figured that part out, but some people later down the road might want it for reference. Make sure Opera is closed when/if you edit that file.

BTW. It's just easier to look for these settings in opera:config. It's all the same and you can edit settings while opera is running.

Thanks alot John, for showing me the existence of operaprefs.ini (since I run it under Windows, it is located in Documents and Settings). Meanwhile I decided to do it the hard way, deleting all the Opera directories from the D&S folder. Until I recovered all my settings there will be some weeping and gnashing of teeth, but at least my plugins are functional again.

BTW, if anybody out there considers backing up his mails from Opera M2: If you got more than one mail account, you should keep in mind to do the backups seperately for each one. Otherwise, Opera will wreak a dreadful mess to them.

And Saska, wrappers like the opera:config page are useful things from time to time, but they're not inerrant. As for me, I found several conflicts between the .ini files and the values in opera:config. Aside from that, in opera:config you can see and edit only a certain part of the data set by operaprefs.ini.

It's one of the nice "features" of Opera for (almost) decades: Its profile/.ini file/whatever you call it's increadibly prone to get (unavoidably) corrupted, whenever some time passes (days, weeks)...

Some kind of "profile sanity check" should be a needed feature, becase everyone here in the forums can see how MANY users need to solve their problems erasing their profile (periodically) to just recreate it again afterwards (losing precious time and settings). That's just a plain PITA.
