Auto-detect... for common ones anyways (Hotmail, GMail, etc, I think it just uses a pre-defined list, rather than "actively" finds the ports, and server information) but editing the settings is easy enough if you use a less common one. You can usually get the information from the website itself.

If you view "C:\Program Files\Opera\defaults\mailproviders.xml", you can see a list of email addresses etc. that Opera can detect to auto-config your mail account.
