"Installing..."? But it's already installed

This is my first post here. Well, technically it's my second; I composed a post this afternoon in Opera Min 4.2 on my phone and hit the Submit button, and saw the post listed, but now I've come back here on the PC this evening, the post seems to have disappeared. So I'll try again...

I installed Opera Mini 4.2 a couple of weeks ago and have been a very happy user since then. It certainly knocks spots off of the native browser in my phone (the LG GC 900 "Viewty Smart"). However, on firing it up this morning, I got the message "Installing..." and the app appeared to hang. I waited for some considerable time but eventually decided that the only recourse was to delete the app and install it again. Of course, I lost all of the bookmarks that I'd so carefully set up over the last couple of weeks. (Yes, I know about syncing but I haven't got around to setting that up yet.)

Does anyone have any idea what might have happened? Is it something I've done? Can I do anything to avoid this problem in future?

To avoid redoing bookmarks over again all you have to do is sync them up.
OM 4.2, scroll down the start page and select "Synchronise Opera". Log in pages will pop up, fill in your login details and you'll have your bookmarks and custom search engines synched.
OM 5, Go to Menu> Settings> Opera Link and turn it on, you'll be asked to sign up. Click on already have an ID, and fill in your log in details and you'll have everything synched up.
Your OM reinstalled itself due to damaged/currupt Record Management System (RMS) file. This mostly happens if OM was not properly exited in the previous session or maybe your device crashed while OM was running.
Try reinstalling OM when your know there is a proper GPRS or 3G network coverage (you conplained during installation the app seem to hang, mine doesn't take less that 10 secs to install).
Next time exit OM properly by going to Menu> Exit.
Leave it for now, you can do it tomorrow. (Procrastinate)

Yes, thanks. That's why I said, "(Yes, I know about syncing but I haven't got around to setting that up yet.) "

Not sure I understand this. I reinstalled OM myself after it hung. Or are you saying that when I ran it, it found the corrupt file, downloaded itself again and attempted to install itself, and hung during the attempt? If that's true, it gave no visual feedback about what it was trying to do.

I always do. I realise that OM relies on proper communication with the Opera server, so I always close down in this way.

Thanks for your feedback. Hopefully I won't have the problem again. And I've now set up syncing so even if I have to reinstall Opera, at least I won't have the job of setting up my bookmarks again.

The only thing I can add to slyphax's reply is that depending on the memory in your phone, you may want to clear your history at exit, and once you synch shut synch off. In lower memory phones, Mini will take forever to load with synch engaged. smile
