Torrent Implementation

Hi,

When downloading a torrent, the file is first checked. During this file checking my computer (Windows 7, new computer with 4 Gb of RAM) becomes very very slow and it's nearly impossible to use it. How come?

Thank you.

the bitorrent implementation is very basic in opera so the only way to fix it is to use another torrent client and disable the builtin torrent app.

Don't even bother with the Opera BT client, it's outdated & have not been able to work properly for a very long time...
I recommend you to use other BT client instead.

I guess no one uses Opera's torrent client. Why don't they just remove it?

At least I never used it. Feels like a dead body part on the great browser.

I've used it for smaller torrent files. It works just fine for anything under 500 MB, at least in my experience. I really don't download movies or large batches of photos (or any other media) through Opera, though.

Yes, for small files it works pretty nice and fast. But for bigger files it just doesn't start downloading, so it's a hit and miss situation... which made me chose not to use it at all, I'm afraid down

I agree the opera torrent client is pretty useless this way. I just tried to download a 5GB file with 10.53 on winxp sp3 and it just ate all of my memory in a few seconds while checking the file (Utorrent doesn't use any memory at all while checking files...) The worst part is that it kills my internet connection completely. I can't browse any sites (even with an other browser) until I shutdown opera. But then the shutdown takes like 10 minutes because it's freeing up all the virtual memory I used or something. Another thing is that I don't see the memory usage, behind the opera process in task manager, change once I start a torrent download. But an external program shows my memory usage is skyrocketing.

So I agree with e-berlin. Either fix it or just remove it.

yeah i've used it sometimes with success, but other times it just sits there with ? / ? for downloaded. They should either trim it off or fix it up, it'd actually be pretty nice if it worked well but since it doesnt i just use other clients instead :/

its basic - you dont use Opera for wirting your documents though it has spellcheck^^
its kind of handy if i want to download something small and intend to share it later - like supporting faster openoffice downloads etc ^^

What you're saying makes no sense at all... Let me rewrite my previous post with spell check example:

I just tried to type a word of 10 characters with 10.53 on winxp sp3 and the spell check just ate all of my memory in a few seconds while checking the word (MSWord doesn't use any memory at all while spell checking...) But then the shutdown takes like 10 minutes because it's freeing up all the virtual memory I used or something. Another thing is that I don't see the memory usage, behind the opera process in task manager, change once the spell check starts. But an external program shows my memory usage is skyrocketing.

And you're basically saying: Spell check is basic in Opera... just type small words.. + apples & oranges comparison

Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a Torrent client in Opera. But the state it is in now, it's just useless.

1) the efficiency of the features wasnt a topic here^^
2) uToorent is just to good - Opera would have to make reall ybuig efforts to meka something half as good without destroying the browser - so what the heck- they can leave it "for the case" for peaople who have no idea how to download torrents otherwise (got parents?)
everyone else will use uTorrent anyway

1) Have you even read the topic?
2) It's destroying the browser already if I use it. Not to mention overall system performance.
