Error Message Every Time Opera Starts Up

I get the above error message every time Opera starts, right after my start-up prompt.

I'm wondering how to fix this while preserving my Opera settings, and without taking a sledge-hammer approach to the issue.

As far as I can see, the only application using that file would be Opera itself!
Do you actually use Opera Mail?
If not, try moving the file to another location and see if the error message goes away (Opera will probably re-create it anyway).
Obviously if you use Opera mail, that's not an answer as you'll need to keep the existing file!

I've tried moving the file, and I just tried renaming it again--the message still comes up.

I don't use Opera Mail, but I do use Opera's IRC features, which seems to be bundled with a lot of the mail settings. Since this message has been popping up I haven't been able to use any of the IRC features.

I've tried reinstalling, but to no avail.

I'm running Opera as a limited user on Windows 7 x64. Everything is up-to-date (drivers, Windows Updates, and Opera itself).

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Windows 7, or any 64 bit operating systems, so I don't know what their file locking mechanisms are.
Have you tried running as an administrator, if you can do that?

Others I hope will know more about this.
The only thing I can suggest is that you do a new single-user clean install of Opera into a different folder, and see if that has the same problem.
If it has, it must be operating system related and needs to be reported to Opera.
I would back up your existing Opera folders first just in case!

Ah yes, but there's that sledge-hammer approach I spoke of.

Well, not really, because you aren't compromising your existing Opera installation, just installing a parallel "out of the box" version.

Use the classic installer, not the msi installer, as that may do things to your existing installation if it detects it.

Click the "Advanced Options" link and download the Classic Installer.

why use classic instead of msi?

It should be safer if you want to do a new parallel installation without risking the original installation.
The Windows Installer can search for other previously installed versions and sometimes remove or corrupt them even when you don't want it to.
The Classic Installer I don't think pays any attention to previously installed versions unless you specifically tell it to update an existing version.

I had the same problem a while ago. It turned out that the file was open by GoToMyPC, which I wouldn't have expected. (I used Opera to launch GoToMyPC.)

You can find out what's got the file open in several ways. The simplest is by using the excellent Process Explorer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

From Process Explorer menu, do a Find and look for omailbase.dat. Procexp will show you which process is holding the file. Then you can decide how to proceed.

I just got this error message (only appear once). but when I open opera, all my email and feeds folders was empty. :-(

Good thing I make a backup 3 days ago.

When you get the error message, it means Opera can't open the file, and so can't get at your feeds and mail. However, if you immediately reboot, it is very likely that whatever was locking the file will be cleared and Opera will reopen normally with all your data safely there.

It also happens sometimes when I restart Opera immediately after closing it - it seems Opera sometimes takes a few second to close omailbase.dat. But I found that restarting - or, at worst, waiting until Opera is gone from processes in Task Manager and rebooting will cure it.

install and run
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

click find, enter omailbase.dat. Double click on search result, it will highlight the process handle in black, right click and choose close handle.
