Add "Opera closing" icon to systray
One thing that has often annoyed me is that Opera removes its system tray icon far too early when closing the program. I usually close Opera just before shutting down the computer - and too often I have opened Opera the next morning and found myself looking at the post-crash startup screen.This means that I often close Opera and then either go do something else for a couple of minutes or actually sit and watch the task manager for when it's safe to shut down. This is not good software behaviour!
Please add some kind of icon to indicate that Opera is in the process of closing (I imagine its taking a while to update mail files or something) and let this stay in the system tray until the last possible moment. Even if it's still a bit annoying to wait, at least then I could tell when it's safe to switch off!

That may be a reason for the slow closing, but I still think it's just bad design that the system tray icon is not left visible until the last possible moment.

I strongly agree with a feature of this sort. I also wish for some kind of clear indicator of whether the Opera.exe process has closed yet. I have a slow, old computer and if Opera has been open for long enough it takes 1-3 minutes before it actually terminates. This causes problems when restarting Opera for whatever reason, and when shutting down the computer.
Out of frustration, I've actually written my own script in AutoHotKey to avoid this problem. I launch it instead of Opera.exe, and it opens Opera for me, waits until it closes, and then informs me. The script I actually use now is more complex than this (and can be run even if Opera is already running), but I've provided this example for simplicity.

Loop {
runwait "c:\program files\opera\opera.exe"
msgbox 4, Opera launcher, Opera.exe has exited. Restart it?
IfMsgBox No
Exit
}
