Downloads Start Windows Media Player
Whenever I click a download link, Opera wants to start Windows Media Player. This does not happen when I click a download link in IE.

Go to:
Preferences > Advanced > Downloads
Uncheck "Hide file types opened with Opera"
In "Quick find" type the extention you're openening (eg MP3) and choose the Action by editing it.
In your case, it will probably on "Open with default application"

Interesting. I saw that exe files were linked to WMP. I got rid of that. We'll see if it works differently now. Thanks.
