can new tab animation be turned off in 10.53 XPSP2?

I just upgraded from ver 10.10 to 10.53. All is fairly OK, but whenever I open or close a tab, the tab itself does a sweep animation that I find annoying and distracting. I use windows XP Pro SP2. Is there a way to turn this off?
