Gmail IMAP configuration not satisfying

Hello,

I just set up Gmail IMAP on Opera here but I'm not satisfied. I'd like my Gmail folders to be merged with my regular mail folders in Opera. Instead, it has its own folders at the bottom of the mail panel sad

I'd like to see my Spam folder in order to report mails as spam to Google, but I don't want to be warned when new messages arrive in the spam folder, and I don't want the Spam folder to be bold.

I'd like only one Trash folder, the one on top that came built in Opera, with all Gmail trash mail inside and in sync. Same for Sent Mail, Outbox, and Drafts.
Could you help me please?
Thanks,
Charles.

Nothing you can do at the moment.

Opera's built-in filters need to be able to show only messages from [Gmail]/All Mail to avoid duplicates. They can't do that at the moment.

There are no "use IMAP folder as Trash/Sent/Draft/Spam view" options either. (Or, even options to designate an IMAP folder as trash etc. (besides sent)).

There's no "don't show notifications for IMAP folder X".

There's no "don't show unread status for IMAP folder X".

There's no option to move views around in the mail panel.

There's no 'use Filters to show messages from "list of IMAP folders."'

Manipulating messages in Opera's built-in filters doesn't work the same as it does in IMAP folder views currently. (dragging etc.)

Opera's can't determine the names of Gmail's special folders to map things without using XLIST (because the names are localized) and Opera doesn't support that yet. And, the XLIST spec that's being worked on has changes that Gmail (and current clients that support xlist) hasn't updated to yet.

Note: I've been filing feature requests for some of these things for a while. Hopefully things will be better in the future.

But, again, Gmail IMAP is just so goofy with how it does things, that it's understandable why it can be a pain to use.

This implementation of Gmail IMAP with Opera M2 is really half-backed. When I throw a mail into the trash in Gmail's web interface, I get a "New mail" notification in M2 and the "Trash" folder gets bold sad

I'll just use the web interface and remove my mail account in M2 for now.
Charles.

Yes, of course. What you did in the web interface caused a new message to be placed in the IMAP Trash folder.

I severely messed up the directions above (because of a visual misinterpretation of the mail.google.com IMAP label settings and an assumption that something was a bug when it wasn't.). I can't edit my posts above anymore (just deleted them), so just see Make the Gmail IMAP Server Act like a Normal IMAP Server from now on and check back with it from time to time.

I think you'll see though that besides not being able to specify an IMAP spam folder, Opera works fine. It's just that Gmail IMAP is so far from how things are supposed to work, it's crazy. Of course, I still understand (and agree with) the desire to have Opera work like the mail.google.com interface does (as an option at least).

Hello, since many users like to use IMAP (and gmail particularly) at least it would be worth considering more flexibility of the M2 client to be tuned to work with an IMAP server. E.g. I miss the sync of the drafts folder and I see no reason why other folders are syncable but drafts not....

For my part, the biggest issue I have with GMail and Opera is that when I delete a GMail e-mail from Opera, it isn't deleted in GMail, it just becomes 'read' in GMail. This means I have to continually open GMail to really delete the e-mail.

I agree with the other posters that the GMail impllementation of IMAP is crazy. However, it's such a widely used crazy that I would like to ask Opera to consider supporting it as a special case. Opera is still far and away my favourite e-mail client, the one I've been using for many, many years now, and it would make it really noticeably better to have some special support for GMail.

Thanks very much in advance, Cheers, Tony.

@calande: Thanks for asking exactly my question!

Has anyone from Opera team give us any hope to do that thing in near future?

Following the tips on the link provided above, I could set Gmail/Sent as my Sent Folder, as it's important for me to add new contacts to M2's contacts.adr. It's working fine, but you have to set 'Show read' and 'Show sent' on your display options for this folder view. If any of those options are missing, you might get a scare just like the one I got (no messages on the Gmail/Sent showing!). wink

"M2 doesn't offer an option to upload Drafts to Gmail. However, you can drag (or copy and paste in this case) from the All Messages/Drafts view to the [Gmail]/Drafts IMAP folder view."

Doing what is said above, however, hasn't worked (for me - XP Home with Opera 10.6). I tried both dragging and copy/paste. It does SOMETHING, as I see M2 connecting to Gmail servers, and 'Appending message' shows at the connection status bar for a long time, but the message never shows up at the Gmail/Drafts folder view nor does it show at the web interface for Gmail/Drafts. Also, I have to kill the connection after doing that, as it seems to keep going on and on and on with no results. Any ideas why this is so?

Thanks!

I tested and all works fine.

1. Compose a message with a to address, subject and body.

2. Close the tab (don't choose discard).

3. Goto the All Messages/Drafts message list, right-click on the draft and choose copy.

4. Goto the [Gmail]/Drafts IMAP folder's message list, right-click in it and choose paste.

The message appears and even loads fine in the webmail interface.

Note that if you don't see the message in the [Gmail]/Drafts IMAP folder, make sure you have View -> Show -> Show Sent checked.

If you tried to copy a draft without something in the To field, subject and body field, it's possible that the Gmail IMAP server and or Opera didn't like it. Also, if you tried to copy the draft while the compose tab for that draft was still open, it's possible you tried to initiate the copy right at the second Opera was updating the draft (every minute I think).

All well, up to a certain point. I could reproduce the results you got (I tried twice to make sure), and when both "show sent" AND "show read' were enabled, I got what you got, with some inconsistencies, as you can see on the image below:
drafts problems imap m2.PNG
As you can see, M2's Drafts view got a second copy of the message that was copied-and-pasted to GMail, and the first test message didn't show the addressee (it's on the message header, though).

I'm just glad that it's working now. A tweak here (=your help), Gmail servers working fine there, I think I have what I needed. Thanks again!
