BlackBerry Opera Mini 5 stops downloading large files

I can't download large files with Opera Mini 5 (9700), it downloads most of it then says there was an error. I'm talking about 20MB file sizes.

This is default problem of opera mini. It takes too longs to respond over a download action and most of times give downloading error. Try ucweb browser if it is available 4 ur phone. It has one of the best mobile download manager. You can use it atleast 4 downloading purpose.

I've noticed this new problem as well.

Until last week I was downloading large files with Opera Mini 5...it just stopped working around the first of last week. Now all of the downloads I start don't make it past 2.9MB....and it is consistently stopping at 2.9MB.

Anyone in the know care to share what's going on?

No. The BlackBerry browser won't let you download files over 3 or 4 mb which is one of the major reasons I've been using Opera Mini in the first place.

There are some things I really don't like about OM5 (can't search bookmarks or leave sort order as date added, for instance), but until 2 weeks ago at least it was still able to download large files. Now that doesn't even work and I'm about to uninstall it because its become almost completely useless to me. As was already mentioned, OM4.2 doesn't play well with BlackBerry OS 5 and is also unusable because it doesn't recognize the OS properly and reverts to some weird WAP mode it looks like. If it wasn't for this, I never would've "upgraded" to OM5 to begin with!

What connection protocol is used? What happens if you try to download between 0000 0600 h?

Could you please change the thread title ? This applies to all platforms. Yet another server issue, it seems. I noticed this yesterday ( 6MB file ), but did not report hoping it'll be fixed. 4.2 works fine.

I've tried both http and socket to no avail.

As far as the 0000-0600 time window - what timezone? PST(local)? UTC? Another?

*I* can't, but maybe a moderator can. Or you could just start another thread with the suggestion to merge this one to it...

Time from your country (local) AM range. Less users connected, this is the idea.

I don't think you get it. It ALWAYS aborts at 2.9MB. That is NOT a server overload issue. No way.
HOWEVER, as I'm sure you won't believe me, I've just tried it at 0210 local (PST, or -7 UTC), and guess what!! It still doesn't work.
It aborts right at 2.9MB (go figure).

Ok, thanks to everyone who has made suggestions thus far, but at this point, this really needs a DEV'S ATTENTION.

I have been unable to download the MP3 podcasts for Engadget.com entirely without a failed download. I used to be able to but not in the last month or so. I do get close to the end but it always fails about 5-10 MB from completion.

Jeremyn, you've got my attention smile

Ok, let's get this one sorted out. First I need to know what device you have and how much free space you have on the media where you're trying to download the file (I assume you use the sdcard). Then I would like to know the opera mini build version (from help menu) and anything else you think can help me.

Another thing: If I remember correctly I could download a 10 mb file with the blackberry browser without problems (once I had installed a memory card).

I've been trying to reproduce this yesterday without success. Or. To be more specific:
Blackberry 8900 curve (connecting to wifi):
9.5mb no problems
19.8 mb, first attempt, stopped at 6.1
19.8 mb, second attempt, stopped at 0.1
19.8 mb, third attempt, finished with no problems

But I have heard more users complaining about this so let's get to the bottom with it. If you can help me reproduce the problem on my phone I can come up with a solution. Deal? smile

Ok, so I've made some progress on this one. Here's my theory:

You are trying to download the file to the device's internal memory. I don't know why (file system issue? But c'mon, 3 mb file limit?) but it doesn't seem to be possible to download large files to the internal memory. When I removed my sdcard and tried to download a large file it failed at exactly 2.9 mb in opera mini and the native browser just told me the file was too big. When I downloaded to the card I had no problems (except for a flaky wifi connection)

So. At the moment I feel pretty confident that this is not an opera issue. But I would love to hear some theories/facts on why the device behaves this way...

An item can't be downloaded with Opera Mini without interrupting the connection because phone browser can't read the chunks. The fact is that this bug is present even in page loading and critical point is ~450kb when connection fails.

Thank you for your comment Sagrid, but I don't really see how this is related to the 2.9mb download limit.

If I understand you correctly, you experience broken connections / pages that don't load / even while surfing normal web pages. Further, you have seen that this happens around when 450kb has been downloaded.

I really think this is to be treated as a different bug, unless you can provide more information that links this to the download problem.

Anyway, please give me all information you think is relevant to the problem and report a bug if you haven't already done. Then I'll see if we can improve the situation for you.

I believe it can be a built in limitation to prevent a rouge application to fill up the memory and potentially crash or lock the phone.

I had a similar limit om my old SGH-Z400, where the phone reported ~3.5 MB free on the file system although I had more than 12 MB internal memory free. And that had nothing to do with downloading as it applied to local file copying as well.

If you wish to test I recommend MiniCommander .

Just to let you know I am having a similar problem with Opera Mobile 10 final on nokia 5800 (s60 v5).

The file wont go past 3.9mb, it always gets stuck on that number if the file is larger than 3.9mb, and I am definitely saving to the sd card, and the card has over a gig of space left on it, yet I cant download a 70mb file.

Skyfire and my default browser both work fine for this task.

Tis very annoying!

sorry man that wouldn't solved the problem either. I have the same annoying problem using my N95 8gb. OM5 never seem to be able to download files larger than 3, 4 or 5MB. the fault is not the phone as other browsers and OM 4.2 can download files larger than 50mb. the problem must be in how OM 5 was configured to proceed in downloading larger files.

I also have the same problem. My downloads get to 2.9mb and then Download error. This applies to any file, .mp3 .exe etc
I am using Blackberry bold 9700 on Orange (uk) with Opera mini 5.
I have tried with wifi connection and also through 3g etc. With an 8gb SD card and also to the device memory. But still the same, at 2,9mb the download just stops.

My downloads (as small as 200kb) seem to stop randomly with my BlackBerry (on BIS), but what I usually do to make sure the downloads complete, is to pause and resume the files in the download manager; the bigger the file, the more I pause it. This doesn't always work, and IS annoying, but it helps.

Downloading with wifi works perfectly, without the need to pause and resume.
