"Open windows instead of tabs" Anyone still using it?

Hello,

I think the handling of windows gets worse and worse and there seems noone in Opera's that actually testing it despite using it. The current Beta builds are unusable for me. Just a few examples:

  1. Tab bar --> Show only when needed (with the standard place at top). Try it, you loose all window controls. No longer any close, minimize, maximize or sth. else. Everything is cut off. Is there really a bug report necessary to recognize such rudimentary things?
  2. Opening Opera through a shortcut --> a new tab is opened. You can configure the shortcut to use "-newwindow" but if an application tries to open a link and Opera is already open, it's also opened in a new tab. Ignoring the setting "Open windows instead of tabs" totally.
  3. bug-343143 still present since Opera 9.5. If windows are used the browser becomes unresponsive for a long time (searching in history requires a restart to prevent this)
  4. not directly related, but also introduced with the new window design: the vertical spaces between bookmark items and context menu are far too big, now. See also Spacing issue on menu items and Bookmarks (how to narrow the vertical spacing between items?)
  5. BTW: if tabs are used it's no longer possible to see the complete window title, despite the workaround from 1. to place the tab bar at bottom. Quite convenient, huh.

Am I really the only one that uses windows instead of tabs who is annoyed by these issues? Anyone else with similar problems using windows instead of tabs?

I use the "use windows" setting, and have the same problem as this - especially with my email program. Really annoying when Opera decides to use a minimized window to add the tab to (which happens to have been the last window to have focus), instead of a visible, non-minimized window.

Of course, lately Opera has been mis-handling links from my email, so I haven't been able to use it properly for that anyway sad

I do not use windows at all, only tabs. I also moved my task bar to the top of the screen...

I don't regard that as a bug at all — if you tell Opera to a) hide the tab bar if there is only one tab, and b) use the title bar for tabs, then it is only doing what you asked. If you want to retain the minimize, restore, close buttons, then don't use the "Show only when needed" setting. Otherwise, show the menu bar or personal bar at the top.

I am quite happy with those settings, which makes maximum use of space. If I want to quit Opera there are plenty of other methods than using the close button on the title bar.

Again, if you want to use the title bar for the Tab title text, don't use it for the tab bar. For some, it is convenient not to waste the title bar space — if you find it useful, then set the menu bar at the top, use the native skin, or whatever other way you like to retain the title bar.

Well, I think there are nearly no users using this (except you obviously), so I think instead of either wasting development time or making Opera buggy in a certain scenario, Opera should simply remove this feature. (At least from the GUI and only make it usable from opera:config)
Using Windows 7 64Bit SP1 and of course Opera
(If nothing else stated the most current weekly) on a nice Dell Studio XPS 16!

I also prefer using windows to tabs, so recent builds have been really annoying. I guess I should reinstall an earlier version. Even when I redefine the "open' function for "opera web documents" with "/new window" or "-newwindow" or whatever, it doesn't work. (It did work briefly, and then I rebooted and/or opera updated itself and it all went to hell again.)

I totally agree that there is a bug with opening a new window from the shortcut issue. Your second example in this case .

I also informed opera about that issue as a bug at post your bug topic or whatever it is.

and I also mentioned here but did not get any comments

I don't upgrade my opera 10.10 just because of this silly little mistake...

I don't use that option. I only use an extra window if i want to watch a video on one monitor and do something else on the other.

Nice post... Back-in-the-day, with Firefox 2.0, this kind of behavior could be somewhat controlled (by editing configuration, since it had been removed from the options dialog, http://corlija.wordpress.com/2006/10/29/firefox-20-link-open-bug/ ); however, more recently, not a single browser offers what I find logical in my web-browsing. Ah, well. :$
