mail.yahoo.com - New Yahoo! Mail interface (AJAX/looks like Outlook) blocks Opera in some cases
Problem: New Yahoo! Mail stops working after updating Opera, displaying an error message that your browser is unsupported by the new interface. You're sent back to Yahoo! Mail Classic interface. We think: Yahoo! policy doesn't support Opera per their browser requirements. However, the interface works fine with Opera, and Yahoo! have set up an exemption allowing Opera to load the new interface anyway. When you first visit Yahoo! Mail and configure it to use the new interface, a cookie is set with version specific data that allows bypassing the browser requirements of the new interface. The problem occurs when Opera is updated, because old cookie data remains and is loaded in the new version of Opera, and Yahoo! doesn't recognize or update the cookie information, causing it to misidentify Opera as being incomptible with the new interface, and blocks it accordingly. When the cookie expires or is deleted from your computer, the process starts over. Rinse and repeat.
Solution: When you update Opera, delete all yahoo.com cookies and clear cache.
Hi toddgiffen,
you're quite right that Yahoo mail blocks Opera by default. However, if your browser.js is enabled Opera should automatically work around that blocking and load Y!Mail fine anyway.

Whoa, that's a huge list of sites that don't work in Opera without special work arounds. O_O
I guess that the problem might be with Opera and browser.js then? I never disable it, and there are other people for whom this problem crops up for as well (which is why I decided to create this topic).

Bear in mind that if developers tended to test only in IE then Firefox would certainly have similar levels of problems. If developers only tested in Firefox IE would be in the same predicament.
Sometimes site developers find bugs in a browser. Sometimes the browser finds a bug in the site. If a developer is testing in that browser they're likely to workaround or fix the issue before the site goes live. If they don't, that's where browser.js comes in.

That's odd. What does the browser.js information page say about the status and version of your browser.js file?

Current browser.js status: enabled.
Target version and time stamp of the active browser.js file is Opera Desktop 10.50 core 2.5.22, May 11, 2010 .
--- Next time it happens I will report back the status with browser.js and I will try to eliminate what cookie or cached files cause it.

Hi I think I have the same problem: since version 9.5 the new Yahoo mail, that looks like outlook stopped to work, more precisely, the keybord shortcuts stopped to work, like selecting multiple messages using shift + arrow, or just use the arrows to change message, or press 'r' to answer o received mail....

Thanks, we figured it out - and this time it's my fault, it's a mistake in browser.js. Will be fixed in next file.
