Quick switch for "scroll is pan"

I love the Scroll is pan option (it allows one to scroll with a grabbing hand like in acrobat reader, which you can do without scrollispan activated by holding Ctrl+Alt), however it makes selecting text impossible, unless there's an existing option I missed. I like not having to have my left hand on the keyboard all the time, so holding Ctrl+Alt permanently is out of question. Therefore, I need a solution to switch quickly between "drag" and "select" mode. in acrobat reader, there's a toolbar icon, and there's also a quickly accessible switch by right-clicking anywhere and selecting the mode in the menu. Even better, if I could just start selecting the text by double-clicking it (double clicking starts selection mode, goes back to drag mode when I release the button) it would be the most efficient way.

Would you find a better handling of the dragging mode useful?

Try using a <a href="opera:/button/Set%20preference,%22User%20prefs|Scroll%20Is%20Pan=1%22,,%22Drag%22,%22Checkbox%20skin%22%20>%20Set%20preference,%22User%20prefs|Scroll%20Is%20Pan=0%22,,%22Drag%22">button</a>, you could also use the same command in a menu if you wanted to (and know how to edit your menus).

Define "better." The point of Opera is that it allows users to customise the interface to a great extent. If you want a mouse gesture to enable/disable this you can create one in Preferences, Shortcuts, Mouse Setup. E.g. you could define:

GestureUp, GestureDown = Override Scroll Is Pan

A button is another way, or a context menu item. Whatever you find easiest may not suit others. Its hard to think of any way using just the mouse that would suit everyone.

I didn't know I could customize buttons and menus to change advanced preferences and such. Where is that information available?

Opera Documentation is a good place to start looking.

The Opera Wiki is also useful, as is Tamil's Blog.

See the Opera Buttons and Tips links in my sig too.

I think a better solution would be to enable the panning when you hold down the right mouse button (enabling you to use the left mouse button to pan).

Extending tpspoons' idea, what about using the scroll wheel button (i.e. the "middle button")? You could make it a toggle as used by the (practically useless, IMO) "auto-pan" thing, or simply allow panning by dragging with the scroll-wheel pressed, without having to "switch modes"; the equivalent of holding Ctrl + Alt while dragging with the LMB. I don't think the current input system lets you turn things on only while a button/key is pressed, but it would be a nice addition just for general input configuration, not just in this particular case.

@Vectronic, Pesala, or any other Opera customization experts: is there a way to do this with the configuration settings as they are now? If so, I couldn't figure it out. If not, consider this a request (to the maintainers, not you folks wink) for it to be implemented.

I know this can be done with external utilities (and I have) but I'd like it to just be part of the browser itself.

Thanks for reading
