Speed Dial improvements, a netbook user like me would MIGHT need.
Opera Introduced Speed Dials in Opera 9 something - right? And there were 3rd party blogs revealing some hidden features of it, a customizable if you don't want only 9 speed dials, until Opera 10 came. Speed Dials are now customizable, but only 2x2 2x3 4x3 4x4 5x4 5x5.
However as a netbook user It's hard to have more than 21 speed dials. Mine is 3x7.

If its like 5x5, the speed dial is now hidden.

Compared to Google chrome's extension called "Speed Dial"
the speed dials compress if the space isn't enough.

I really love this feature but I"m on a netbook but I have a limited speed dial.
My suggestions:
Option 1.A thin scroll bar on the speed dial page.
Option 2.Compress speed dials as they grow.

sounds more like a bug to me ... maybe it should be reported

I agree.
Opera should work like in your Option 2 (maybe thumbnails can't be so small and so this doesn't work). I wouldn't like to see scroll bar in Speed dial, so NO to Option 1.

I guess option 1 would be best.
I also use a Netbook and the speeddials (5x4) grow when I have attached it to a Monitor and use Opera there. However, they only shrink to a certain size before they are pushed out over the screen and are no longer visible.
If they would shrink too small, you wouldn't be able to see the content anymore :-(, so Scrollbars it is. Even so it doesn't make much sense, but I guess this is only for an emergency option like for me: I like the full set of speeddials since I use my Netbook on a Monitor as well, on the Netbook itself I compromise that some dials are not displayed....)
Not sure if this helps: I believe I have seen in the Speeddial.ini that you can also specify custom arrangement (such as 2x5) for weird screen sizes some Netbooks have. Haven't tried it, but might help you/ work as well?
Another tip: Remove the search on the speeddial page, this also gives some extra room desperately needed on Netbooks :-)
Ask me how if you don't know.

Hmm, thinking about it: Why don't speeddials behave like normal HTML pictures? You could have them adjust automatically to the screensize attached with a "best fit" option: On a wide screen monitor this might be 6x4 on a regular monitor it might be only 4x4 and provide a maximum and minimum size so it would display always the most it can on certain screens.
(But please retain also the fixed format as otherwise it doesn't look so nice if you arrange for example certain pages on the right and others on the left side of the speeddial as this would be messed up when you attach it to a different screen....)

If only My Opera would let me update this request I will update it.
Anyways:
Option 3: have the option "Dials Distance" on the Customize Speed Dials just like my source Speed Dial extension for chrome. I like it, I like that extension
And I would say it's much better than Opera's current.

If you can find your speeddial.ini (it took me some time under Vista as the file is stored under 'compatibility files' and therefore doesn't appear in the folder specified by Opera - this is something you just have to know...) - if you can find it, as I say, it's easy. I use 3x5 on all my computers (netbook, laptop, desktop).
For people wanting even bigger numbers than say 27, why not, as someone else has suggested somewhere else, simply use 'nicknames'? I do, for the slightly less often needed pages.
Speed Dials do compress but when they can't compress anymore the hide themselves - and it irritates me

This is the largest possible speed dial on a netbook with 10.60a and a 10.2 screen.
