[10.54 3390] Memory dealocation

When I use opera for some time with many tabs open, after closing them and leaving just one open, opera still uses 580 MB of system memory. Is it normal ?

You can still re-open the tabs with all their history, views, settings, etc. from the tab trash can, so they are still there in memory. At least that's how I see the situation as.
Happy Opera user since Opera 5 times.

Opera does not release RAM, like other browser makers do, just to please the users who think it should behave like that. When the OS needs the RAM taken by Opera it is one of the fastest to release it.

Not really. I happened to have Windows XP notifying me about low virtual memory and that's caused by Opera.

It took a few minutes to completely shutdown the browser, what I meant is even when the GUI is gone Opera process is still holding the RAM & VM after shutdown. And no, Opera 10.5x do not release RAM or VM when other application need it... Matter the fact it keep bubble up & freeze my PC until I manage to shut it down, eventually.

Indeed. Opera used to be exemplary, but now it's a lot worse.

You may have found a bug. See if you can reproduce the behaviour and do the honorable thing of submitting it.

Greetings,

Here are two things you might want to try...

One-er. get this: latest snapshot 3394 download page

Install it....

Two-er: Read this Article On Opera memory use Cool Article on Opera memory use

test Opera as indicated in article

for me Opera is using about 215,000 k of mem in the process. that is about 250 mb . That will drop instantly to 30,000 if I minimize opera and not move the mouse.

But I can see what you are talking about , when exiting Opera there is a Memory spike when Opera gets busy as hell taking out the trash (emptying the Cache) why don't you go into ctrl+F12 advanced settings history memory cache off disk cache off and see what happens if nothing changes it should be reported as a bug. wizard checked it my self therein is where your problem is ....doh as soon as I changed the cache settings memory usage when down and when Opera exited since there was no cache it released instantly . the only problem with that is on heavy flash sites with no cache you might be more incline to crash I was cheers

cheers!!

Happened here too before increasing virtual memory settings (only for Opera btw.).

"It releases memory when other apps need it...." is an urban legend IMHO, I've never actually seen this kind of behaviour.

Closing Opera after 2 days of usage takes about 2 min. here (yes, minutes, really...).
Also the GUI is becoming less and less responsive the longer Opera is in use (again, after 2 days of usage, opening a new tab takes about 20 seconds).

Working set seems ok and reasonably low, but reserved mem is growing and growing (and fragmenting as well as it seems).
Using Win 7 x64 and latest Opera snapshpot, lab build or final, whatever is newer...
