Can widget handle server initiated communication?
I want to use opera widgets for a cross platform desktop application.That is, a network application that listens on a certain port for messages initiated
by the server and behaves accordingly.
Example of such an application could be an IM client.
I don't want to use a middle tier nor polling (or long-polling)
I understand that widgets is HTML+JS, so I am not sure how can this be done.

What you would have to work with is XMLHttpRequests. You should read up on it. 
You may also have better luck with a Unite application.
