1. Shut Opera down.
2. Open IE (suppose any other browser will do too) - set as default browser (check if it worked - new pages shouldn't open in Opera anymore) - shut IE down.
3. Restart Opera and click yes on default browser prompt dialog (if you disabled it - go to Settings/Preferences/Advanced/Programs and tick the box to check if opera is a default browser, restart).
4. Now click on any external link - the problem should be fixed!

That fix worked, but for me it's only temporary. Every time I close and re-open Opera it reverts to any external links opening again in a private tabs. Apparently the above fix has been permanent for others but I have to go through the rigmarole of resetting the browsers every time I open up. Any ideas?

Just an idea (might not work as supposed). - Clean install/reset configuration of Opera (export/copy to safe place all settings and important data, remove/rename Opera's user profile folders, eventually install Opera again [if you've uninstalled it]).

Thanks for the input. I'm pretty much a novice and those instructions seem a little daunting, though it's possible I'll get itchy fingers fingers sooner or later and have a go. But you've given me an idea, what with 10.60 in beta and having just learnt I can install two versions of Opera independent of each other it might be sensible to install that instead and see if it works.

It's hard to remember all the details but I remember being pretty confident with v-love's Mozilla fix. I'd been through this in another thread as well. I was ready to try it but the 10.54 update came along and fixed it for me.

V-love assured me at the time that following the instructions and substituting Opera for Firefox it would work. He seemed pretty sure, he added the fix to this thread too: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=603802

That's a shame, I was hoping it would. After ender5000's first fix failed for me I thought I was the unlucky one. The only option I can think of is to make new folder [in Program Files] and do a clean install into that and start from the beginning. I don't know nearly enough to come up with any other ideas.

That worked for me too - every time I clicked on a link in Outlook it came up as a Private tab in Opera. The first time I restarted and then clicked on an link from an email in Outlook (I'm in work - at home I user Opera's email client), the page opened in a non-private tab, but Opera asked for executable link browser, so I pointed it at Opera. I closed Opera and re-started and the next time, an external link resulted in not just the expected page to open, but also a new tab with the Speed Dials showing. The third time was the charm, with just the expected page opening in a non-private tab after closing and restarting Opera 10.61 again.
So, persevere with it guys - it does work after a few goes.

but looks like i'll just have to give up with opera againwhy is it so unfriendly?
ill try again in six months
Opera isn't unfriendly, Windows is as everything is geared towards the user clicking on a link in Outlook and opening it in IE. I got that fixz to work after closing Opera, restarting it, setting it as the default web browser and then clicking on a link in an email in Outlook 3 times in succession.

You don't have to touch the 2nd and 4th boxes.

It works. I just set it to Opera manually. Let's see how long this will work.
