"The Times" pages breaking

Intermittent problem under Opera 10.10 & 3374 et al, but not under IE 8.

Some links such as http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_contributors/article7130101.ece only work half the time. The other half they give a 404 error.

Please don't post back saying it works fine for you unless you've tested it several times over an hour. wink

If no-one responds, I'll assume it's my config. Thanks.

No, it's not just you. Sometimes you can get broken The Times pages to work if you open Firefox and go to the same page, then the corresponding page in Opera works. Which is not particularly helpful because you've opened the page in Firefox so you don't need to open Opera.

I think this has been recorded in this forum before now but Opera didn't fix the problem. And The Times doesn't care.

Thanks, will submit as bug.

Yes, The Times are owned by evil Murdoch empire but they still have some very good journalists and I get my news from Google News.

In Site Preferences I find disabling JavaScript is usually sufficient; but disabling automatic redirection may also be required (e.g. for the obituaries).

Here's some correspondence I had with them last year:

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for your email and apologies for the problems that you have experienced.

When accessing our site, please be advised that Times Online is optimized for Internet
Explorer 6 and 7 and Firefox 2. Therefore, if you are using any other browser, I'm
afraid that we cannot guarantee the functionality of Times Online.

Before accessing our site, please ensure that your cookies and Javascript are enabled
in your browser.

Kind Regards

Hello Jackie,

Actually, if you check any Times Online page at the World Wide Web Consortium's Validator,
http://validator.w3.org/
you'll see that, unfortunately, the Times Online cannot claim to be optimized at all.

Go to site preferences & check "never accept cookies". You might have to do this a couple of times for the various sub-sites, but then it works fine.
