Why Is Opera 10.5- So Much Trouble?

I'll preface this by stating that I have been an Opera person since the early days, when each major upgrade was $35. That was either 1997, or 1998. I have been a huge fan, and have converted many to the browser. And in spite of a few glitches, I have never experiences major problems. Occasionally pages don't come up, but that has most likely due to Microsoft changing things and Opera playing catch-up.

However, the latest upgrade to Opera 10.5, and now 10.53 have completely turned me off. I have so many problems I don't know where to begin. But the worst thing is that when I go to the "Preferences" section, in order to make changes or just look at current conditions. I only see check boxes and small windows. There are no wording explaining their purposes. Where is the wording? Why does the latest version not work for me?

So, I returned back to 10.10, and I am back to my usual Opera. No problems any longer. I rarely have pages fail to function, which was not always the case with 10.5-.

I don't know what is going on here, but whoever is doing upgrades, has made changes that are not thoroughly thought out.

What is going on here?

John

I am wondering whether you changed themes. I had selected/downloaded a new theme that was doing precisely what you describe. Now I'm using Opera Standard (in Appearance), and it works just fine.

I use the Netscape theme and I wondered if that had anything to do with the enormous interface problems I had since 10.5.
However the fact that they changed some of the problems in the hasty May revision suggests that they were part of the base issue and so I want them to keep sorting out the problems and get better at quality control. (user since 2003)

Wanna hear something funny? Opera 9.5 (I repeat, nine-point-FIVE) was a lot of trouble, too. 5 is an evil number, gentlemen. bigsmile

So, do you want to fix the problems, or do you just want to complain? If the latter, save your breath. If the former, other users can help you fix them, which is the main purpose of this forum. “The My Opera forums are a place for Opera users to get in touch with other Opera users for discussions, troubleshooting, and so on.”

A problem related to using skins that were not designed for 10.5x — use the standard skin, then check for new skins from the appearance dialogue if you want something different.

What's going on is the usual race to stay ahead of the competition and try to fulfil everyone's wishes a.s.a.p. No wonder, then, that things cannot be thoroughly tested on all operating systems, with every custom skin, and every possible combination of customised set up. We would still be waiting for Opera 10.1 if Opera tested everything that thoroughly before release. I cannot remember a major upgrade that didn't require some tweaking to suit my customisations.

Opera 10.5x was rushed out to meet the Browser Choice Screen deadline of March 1st. Nearly three months later, most of the bugs are now fixed. The old skins text bug was fixed in 10.54 build 3383 — the latest test build is 3390.

Fixed DSK-289395 (Text gone in appearance/toolbars section when using several old skins)
