My Guide to setting up Gmail in Opera Mail
A lot of people seem to be having difficulty setting up Gmail in Opera Mail. Here is my setup which I find works pretty well with Opera Mail's folder/label setup.1. Log into your Gmail web account
2. Go to Settings>Labs and enable "Advanced IMAP controls"
3. Go to Forwarding and POP/IMAP and select the following under IMAP access: "Enable IMAP," "Do not automatically expunge messages," and "Immediately delete the message forever."
4. Go to Filters and mark all mail in you Spam folder/label as read (i.e. "Matches: in: spam" "Do this: Mark as read")
5. Go to Labels and select ONLY the following folders/labels as "Show in IMAP:" Inbox, Sent Mail and Spam. Of course, you can also select any labels you have created that you want to see in Opera Mail as well. However, do NOT select All Mail or Trash. I do not see the point of Starred, Chat or Drafts either.
6. In Opera Mail, go into your Gmail account options by R click>Properties. Under the outgoing tab, ensure the IMAP sent folder is set to [Gmail]/Sent
This setup will do the following:
1. No spam will come into your Unread folder/label.
2. Once you delete a message by pressing delete, it will go into your Opera Mail Trash folder/label. Once you delete it from there, it will be deleted from Gmail as well. So deleted emails will not accumulate in your Gmail All Mail folder/label.
3. The Received folder/label will not contain your Sent messages.
4. Dragging and dropping emails into Gmail folders will no longer be necessary.
The only thing that does not work perfectly is that Spam is still visible under the Received folder/label. Strangely, all the Spam in my Gmail folder when accessed through the website is not visible in Opera, only some messages seem to be downloaded?! In any case, a temporary work around is to delete all Spam from your Gmail/Spam folder/label before viewing your Received emails. However, if there was a way to move all mail from Gmail/Spam into Opera Mail's Spam folder/label, that would solve this problem.
I recently put up almost the same directions on this page. The only difference is that I suggest to hide the spam folder from IMAP (because of the same problems you mention).
Given this, it seems we need to be able to set an IMAP Spam folder more than the often-wished trash folder.
I filed DSK-252863 asking for support for setting a Spam folder about a year ago. It would really come in handy with this.
Not only that, but another way to star/unstar a message with Gmail IMAP is to just add/remove the \Flagged flag to/from the message. You can do this without even showing the Starred folder. But, Opera doesn't support the \Flagged flag yet. I filed DSK-267915 to ask for this and mentioned that the Labels access point could have a Starred label to show starred messages.

Hi Burnout,
Thanks for the link. Your directions are certainly more detailed than mine
Any idea why I have Spam in my Received folder that is not in my Spam Gmail folder? I deleted all the Spam in the Gmail account, so should it not be deleted altogether?
BTW, do you play Street Fighter IV on PC?

Not sure. Set the Mail Database Consistency Check Time to 0, save the change and restart Opera. Do they go away then?

No. Haven't played SF since the 3DO/Genesis days.
